UDON THANI: -- A landmark supermarket which had been in business for 20 years in Udon Thani province has become a legend now after it caught fire and completely burned to the ground.

The fire occurred at about 1.00 a.m. Thursday at Top World supermarket, which comprised one 3- storey and 4-storey buildings connected to each other.

The fire started at the fourth floor of the warehouse building where lots of plastic, paper and mosquito spray cans were kept.

There were sporadic explosions during the fire while more than 20 fire engines sprayed water to stop it from spreading to other building in the compound.

But some witnesses said the fire started from an office room on the ground floor.

It took firemen until this morning before the fire was kept under control.

The supermarket owner said his property which include buildings and goods in warehouses worth more than 100 million baht.

The cause of fire is under investigation by forensic police.

The cynic in me asks "What was the insurance cover like?"

I used to shop there frequently, as it was only one kilometer from my home. Of course it was a very cluttered place, with narrow aisles and many times I wondered about the possibility of a rampant fire. There you go. Glad nobody was hurt..(I hope.)

what we actually want is to see the culprit who poisoned the plastic hung drawn and quartered. plus a public statement and full recall. ok, one can dream cant one?what are we actually going to get: lots of dead bodies.

There are "certain" people in Thailand with a reputation for setting fire to shopping centers, but they don't usually practice in their own back yard. whistling.gif

Huge Fire in Udon Thani----- Caused over 3 million in improvements.........coffee1.gif

There have been an interesting number of fires in the last week or so all over the country...BKK, Chaing Mai, Udon, Rayong,..makes an ex firefighter wonder?????

And there it is!

Still missing, though: "But thanks to General P. the fire department suddenly took their job seriously so the fire could not spread."

Sounds very convenient.I wouldn't doubt that it was an insurance job.

100 million in damages surely not?

for some breeze blocks, wooden windows, a stock of dried noodles and mosquito repellent

In Thailand there are many ways to "cook the books".

100 million in damages, eh? Makes it not so difficult to guess how much it was insured for then, doesn't it?

no sprinklers right ?

You beat me to it ! Don't they have a sprinkler system, one would think that the insurance company woud have demanded it.
