Annoying issue with Google Maps on iPhone

Featured Replies

I've been using the Google Maps app on my iPhone 5 to find around places here in Chiang Mai but having some trouble.

I seem to find everything when I type the address on Google and then it gives me the map link, but when I type onto the app it tells me nothing found. This means I have to use both, the browser version and the app to see where the place is while switching to the app to see where my location is. Really annoying!

Any idea what the problem could be? The addresses are always written right (in English, as shown on Google Maps browser version).

I have a similar problem with my iphone 4. Go Android. I've had enough of iproducts.

Do you have a "location services" on? Are you using the "search nearby" option?

I dont know if these apply to a Apple phone, but they would to a Android phone..

OP,

Same issue here and I have never located a way to fix it.

Never used to be an issue with earlier Operating System.

Its the reason I won't buy another iPhone.

Cheers

Dont think its down to the Iphone its a Google problem with there map, i was up in CM last week my mate used his Galaxy Note 3 to try and navigate us round, useless took us out the town round and back in to go what turned out to be round the corner from where we started.

Google, or who ever, took my navigation away, without notice or explanation.

Complaining, if possible, with no results.

They are getting too big and can't handle themselves anymore.

No need to rely on Google for maps (or GPS navigation). Open Street Map (OSM) is used by developers to produce display and navigation programs and apps for Android and other systems. Free maps for most world countries too, including Thailand and Laos.

Visit openstreetmap.org as a start, then App/Play Stores.

I searched for Jomtien yesterday, Android. 'not found''

In my experience, it's the spelling of place names that Google uses.

For instance, Chonburi is Chon Buri and Jomtien is Chom Thian.

"Soi" is "Alley", for instance.

Their data source is a century out of date, it seems, so nothing to do with the platform, or device that you are using.

The problem is the Thai language and translation, or in this instance transliteration (spelling a word to emulate the sound in Thai). There is no agreement or common 'dictionary' for this and the results are seen every day on the roads and maps. It's the same in Laos for that matter which is why you can see different attempts at transliteration everywhere.

None of the English versions properly reflect the tones of Thai or other tonal language. Also, Thai does not use spaces to separate words. The 'ch' and 'j' sounds cannot be properly emulated so you might drive around (or try to read a map) and see a small, relatively unknown-outside-the-area name like Jomtien spelled Jom Tien, Chom Tien, Chom Thian etc. Pattaya itself is very well known and seems to have a single written version, but how many foreigners pronounce it 'correctly', saying Pa-TIE-yer rather than PATTA-ya?

Before I head out anywhere in Thailand I first find on the map on my computer at home the exact place that I am going to including using Street View so I know what it looks like when I get there. Then and only then do I transfer the point to a map on my iPhone whether it the iOS maps, or Google maps or Waze and then navigate my way to the destination! Far too many ways to cock up going to where you need to go and then trying to sort out the issue while in traffic (unless in a taxi) is just too much at times.......but laobali is correct with what he replied with.....

I actually found what the problem was!

The app I was using was Apple map not google maps. For some reason, I thought the default map app is Google Maps on iPhones but I was wrong -_- . It looks quite similar!

Installed the actual Google Maps app and it seems to be working perfectly.

Actually, there are words. But they cannot be used on a family site.

I find Google maps ok - except occassionally I get instructions to turn left into a rice field.

I just looked at Open maps - a wonderful concept! But I cannot see if it has the capacity to produce street names in English. It seems to be only in Thai, and it takes me about 5 minutes of painful translating to work out a street or town name from Thai script.

Google maps has bad info. Apple maps has no info. They announced they were working off the TomTom database, which basically tells me I should not buy a TomTom GPS. I don't understand why apple can't just use some of the cash they have to buy a mapping company that actually has good data (whoever provides Garmin with their data is actually pretty good. Or at least better than what they have currently)

English OSM for Thailand:

It might help if you could use Thai spelling
