Cable TV businesses ask NCPO to halt planned subsidy for digital TV set-top boxes

BANGKOK, 10 July 2014 (NNT) – Cable TV businesses submitted a letter to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) on Wednesday calling for a halt to the planned distribution of subsidy coupons for buyers of digital TV set-top boxes.

Thailand Cable TV Association (TCTA) President Natthachai Aksonradit submitted the letter through the NCPO's public service center at Government House, asking the NCPO to halt the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission's project to subsidize each digital TV set-top box purchase by 1,000 baht.

According to Mr. Natthachai, 25 billion baht will be required for the project, which he said would not fully benefit the public and was prone to collusion due to the its lack of clarity.

He elaborated that the decisions to adjust the number of households receiving the subsidy coupons – from 22 million to 25 million households – and the increase of the coupon's value from 690 baht to 1,000 baht, were made without supporting information.

He also argued there was no measure in place to check if the coupons are fairly distributed to the households.

The TCTA president also took the opportunity to call for a separate set of regulations for cable television channels to be set apart from those governing digital TV channels, due to differences between the two media.

Sorry, we are not speaking about "sat" here but digital terrestrial.

FYI, there are NO channels in English on digital terrestrial.

Some channels in English on cable digital or analog, on IPTV and, of course, "sat".

Then to avoid the crap yu mention, each of us has to choose the suitable provider.

Fully agree, I mean we know who is the biggest cable TV provider, we know who own this company, we know which side it supports and we know they are so honest that everything they say must be "true".

I might consider cable TV but they would have to run a cable from Kahampaeng Phet to our house 65km away for me to consider it.

The cable TV operators DON'T operate in rural Thailand where a large proportion of Thais live anyway.

Whiney little snits.

Best bet is to get something like a MyGica or Sumvision Linux XBMC media box (the MyGica ATV520 box I have is about the same size but much better than an Apple TV). With a good ISP, preferably 3BB internet access which I have as 3BB seem to give much better international internet access than ToT, which is too slow linking to sites outside of Thailand irrespective at how good you local connection is. These wonderful boxes are awesome and give everything you could ever want to stream in English via the internet and more and subject to a reasonably good international internet access they do it very well indeed too. They are not good with Thai TV content of course but that is well covered of course here for the good Thai folk, though soem content does have Thai subtitles available..

Obviously like a Laptop or PC these boxes are perfectly legal as you can watch plenty of legal content like youtube etc. You have the sole responsibility of course to ensure the legality of what you do watch on them, just like you have to ensure you would not use pirated software or material on your PC even if the original was at a rip off price hmm. Right ?? whistling.gif You can even watch live UK TV on them if you want, as stupidly there is no official even licenced or subscription way to do so with the crazy restrictive geo blocking which 98% of people hate and disagree with.
