PHUKET: In the latest top-down-ordered crime-crackdown arrest, Kathu police have detained two local young men, 18 and 20, charged with attempting to rob a Chinese tourist in early hours this morning in Patong.

Surisak Charoenchai, 18, of Patong and Worawit Pensuk, 20, of Kamala, were apprehended at a police checkpoint at about 1.50am near the football field off Tawiwong Rd.

Police at the checkpoint had been alerted that just 5 minutes earlier, a duo on a motorbike had attacked a Chinese tourist, also on a motorbike, in a failed attempted vehicular robbery in the area in front of the Blue Ocean Hotel.

According to the police report, Ms Liam Dam was riding on a Yamaha Scooby motorbike at about 1.45am when the duo approached.

Mr Worawit riding pillion, allegedly used a knife to cut her purse straps free but was unsuccessful in snatching the purse.

The duo fled and are suspected to have then drove to the area in front of Patong Bay Garden Hotel to intimidate and attempt to mug other tourists, to no avail.

Police confiscated the suspects' green Yamaha Mio motorbike with Trang plates as well as a 5-inch-long knife as evidence.

While Ms Liam Dam, along with another Thai lady Ms Surichai Namson have identified the duo as the attackers, the police are asking any other tourists or witnesses to this morning's incidents to come forward and identify the suspects, who are being detained at Kathu Police Station
