July 15, 201411 yr A lot of GHs on the internet, so can I ask if anyone has a personal recommend for a reasonably priced GH? I'll be arriving on the train and taking the ferry over, so would like to find a nice place for at least the first night, without having to walk around for ages with a bag. Thanks.
July 15, 201411 yr Dont forget a few Ringetts for the ferry as no Bureau de Change this side...Last time I was there a few years ago, many of the colonial buildings around Love Lane were being refurbed into guesthouses and bistros.
July 15, 201411 yr I followed this recommendation and stayed here for 3 nights. Wifi is a bit slow but staff are friendly and location is good. http://www.renegadetravels.com/new-asia-heritage-hotel-george-town-penang/

It's above my budget, but if I can't find anything nice for cheaper I'll keep it in mind. I'll have enough money, but I hate paying a lot just for a bed, as I'll be out and about all day.
July 17, 201411 yr Pin Seng Hotel. On Love Lane, just a few seconds walk from Chulia Street. First place on the left if you walk from Chulia. Chinese place with really good people at the desk. I was paying 25RM, for room #4, while I was in Georgetown this past May. No A/C in any room. You can wash your clothes no problem. Spacious rooms, and the whole place is spacious. Wooden floors and walls. A pretty old building and for me that was part of the charm of the place. WiFi is as good as any place that I stayed. I went to several other places, but in the end came back to this one and stayed a couple of weeks. Only thing is they didn't enforce the quiet after midnight rule and some people were noisy even at 2 or 3 am! Those people are gone now though, but if the nighttime management isn't gonna enforce the policy ....

I am trying to train myself to sleep through noise, like the Thais do .
August 11, 201411 yr Author Dont forget a few Ringetts for the ferry as no Bureau de Change this side...Last time I was there a few years ago, many of the colonial buildings around Love Lane were being refurbed into guesthouses and bistros. No problem changing money before the ferry. Loads of people on the train wanting to change money. Plenty of guesthouses and hostels on the roads off Chulia, but cost a lot for what you get. Much worse value than what you get in Thailand for the same money. A tiny single room with ensuite is about 800 baht, with share bathroom is about 600. No tv. And they are all so decrepit. Might be a bagpackers delight, but not mine, for sure. I'm sorry I came to Penang. The beaches are horrid, huge hotels everywhere and can't relax on Batu Ferringhi for all the jet skiis. The sooner back in Thailand the better. It might be all right for a couple of days to get a visa, but that's about it.
