Thailand registers 100,000 migrant workers nationwide
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, July 16 - More than 100,000 migrant workers have been registered nationwide, as part of the national campaign to regulate foreign workers in Thailand, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Sumet Mahosot, director-general of the Department of Employment, said that 102,952 migrant workers were registered at 19 one-stop service centres in 13 provinces through July 15.

Of them, 98,816 were registered at 13 centres in 12 provinces. The highest number of the workers was recorded in Samut Sakhon province as registrations began there, while 16,709 workers were registered in Samut Sakhon alone on Tuesday.

In the meantime, Jirasuk Sugandhajati, permanent secretary for labour, accompanied by Mr Sumet visited the one-stop service centre at the Thailand-Japan Bangkok Youth Centre in Din Daeng district this morning .

It was among six one-stop service centres opened in the capital yesterday for the registration of migrant workers. Registration will continue until August 14.

Mr Jirasuk said the registration in Bangkok continued smoothly after some teething problems yesterday.

Each centre should register 1,000-1,500 workers today. Registrations were limited to 700 workers at each Bangkok centre yesterday for the evaluation of their capacity.

He would decide later if Bangkok needs more service centres. Although the overwhelming number of migrants sought to register in the Thon Buri area of the capital, local service centres were able to handle them, Mr Jirasuk said.

Employers brought a large number of their workers to register at the Thailand-Japan Bangkok Youth Centre this morning. (MCOT online news)

Defence, Foreign Ministries meet on Thailand’s commitment to ASEAN
By Digital Content

14054895152510-640x390x1.jpg

BANGKOK, July 16 -- Thailand’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday met together to discuss the country's readiness ahead of the ASEAN Community (AC) integration, focusing on how to solve conflicts peacefully in order to demonstrate to the rest of the ASEAN member states Thailand's leadership role.

Permanent Secretary for Defense Gen Surasak Kanchanarat and Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Sihasak Phuangketkeao co-chaired the meeting of the Committee of the Directing Centre to Prepare Thailand for the AC Formation and ASEAN Stability at the Defense Ministry earlier today, which was attended by relevant officials.

Gen Surasak said that today was the first meeting to discuss cooperation between Thailand and its neighbours with connecting borders to further support bilateral trade and traditions.

He emphasized that since the country could not be separated from its neighbours to avoid conflicts, all sides must solve problems peacefully, while making sure that all political activities are stable enough for trade and investments to continue, and how the economic sector can assist in the matter.

On the other hand, Mr Sihasak said the agendas for today's meeting are important as Thailand is preparing for AC integration by the end of 2015.

All plans and inside processes are ready for implementation ahead of the integration, he said.

He would also like a meeting to consider Thailand's role as a leader within the ASEAN region to promote ASEAN unity, while keeping in mind how to solve problems of international crime and illegal border trafficking. (MCOT online news)

sai-buri-pattani-wpcf_728x413.jpg

PATTANI: -- powerful homemade bomb exploded while a group of local district officers and defense volunteers travelling in a car was returning from visiting a village in Saiburi district of Pattani last night.

The ambush happened near Lako bridge in Saiburi on the Highway 42 from Pattani to Narathiwat.

The local officials who included two district deputy chief officers and four volunteers were returning to Pattani in a car after visiting local people during the Ramadan feast.

As they arrived near the bridge, insurgents hiding on roadside bush detonated the bomb hid inside a parked sidecar motorcycle near the road.

However, there was no death as the bomb went off before the car arrived. But all were slightly injured from impact of the atmospheric air pressure.

Forensic police inspected the scene Wednesday morning found the badly damaged sidecar motorcycle believed stolen from a vendor at a market.

The explosion blacked out power at the Saiburi tap water office, and damaged a mobile phone antenna of DTAC.

Dengue fever centers set up in Buriram after 200 patients diagnosed

BURIRAM, 16 July 2014 (NNT) -The Buriram Provincial Public Health Office has established dengue fever prevention centers in every district to prevent the disease from taking hold in a wide spread area. The number of patients aged between 10 – 14 years old is 198 so far, and the number is likely to increase during the rainy season.

Dengue fever prevention centers have been set up in all 23 districts in the province with collaboration from the district public health office, Tambon health promoting hospital, local administrative office, schools and public health volunteers to prevent the spread of dengue fever.

The public has been well informed of how to prevent the disease and asked to get rid of mosquito larvae in and around households, schools and communities, which will reduce the risk of widespread infection. There have been 198 people diagnosed of the disease since January. The majority of the patients were in two age groups: those between 10 -14 years old and 5 – 9 years old respectively. The number of patients tends to increase in the wet season and it has been raining a lot recently with flooding in many areas which makes it easier for the disease to multiply.

Anyone with symptoms of high fever, coughing, running nose and chilling should be suspected of contacting dengue fever and sent to see the doctor immediately as any delay may cause deaths.

Swamp forest fire in South continues into fifth day
By Digital Content

14055035976994.jpg

NARATHIWAT, July 16 -- The peat swamp forest in Thailand’s southern province of Narathiwat continues burning with a persistent smouldering fire for the fifth day despite heavy rain last night.

The blaze has engulfed the hillside area straddling the Toh Dang swamp forest and Plak Pla village in Kosit subdistrict of Tak Bai for five days and damaged more than 150 rais of rubber plantations so far.

Journalists viewing the burning swamp forest from a paramotor reported that the heavy overnight rain had extinguished the fires in two major areas, but three other areas are still burning due to underground fuel such as dry rotted plants.

Firefighters, emergency workers and officials are on the scene having been sent to inspect the area and contain the fire. According to the provincial disaster response mitigation office in Narathiwat, it is expected that continued rainfall will help bring the fire under control within three days.

The fire is believed to have started after trees and undergrowth were cut down and burnt to prepare the land for growing rubber and palm. (MCOT online news)
