Ban Pong police chief ousted for failing to curb illegal gambling

BANGKOK: -- The chief of Ban Pong district police in Ratchaburi province was on Thursday abruptly transferred out of the district to an inactive post in the province after local officials and military personnel raided an illegal gambling den Tuesday night.

The raiding party managed to seize many gambling equipments but missed the gamblers who managed to escape.

Pol Maj-Gen Krisana Sapdej, commander of Ratchaburi provincial police, said that Pol Col Itthipol Chalayondecha, superintendent of Ban Pong district police, had failed to follow the instruction that there would be no illegal gambling activities in the district.

Besides illegal gambling, he said that the district was rife with many crime cases such as thefts and illicit drugs and there have been several complaints of police inaction to deal with the criminal activities.

Pol Col Itthipol was succeeded by Pol Col Chatchai Nathoeng, the deputy commander of Ratchaburi provincial police.

Here, it is the police that run all the gambling.

When they take out a competitor, that is all they are doing..... taking out the competition.

That goes for all the other activities such as loan sharking etc....

What is the objective that the Thai military is trying to achieve by this closing of gambling operations? Does the same objective, whatever it is, apply to Thai prostitution which is rampant in Thailand, the world's house of ill repute? What a hypocrisy.

Transferred from one inactive post to another. Great way to see the country...

Gonna apply for citizenship; government sponsored laziness, what a great concept!

There is a huge gambling hall here in Taopoon, bangsue. It is a politician ho owns it....why is this not being shut down?

I think the "it is a politician who owns it..." part of your post answers your question.

Technically I don't think there are any active politicians now but their contracts are still there and are presumably protecting it as was the case here it seems. As someone else said maybe it's possible to report it now.

Yep. As evidenced by the fact that all of the gamblers miraculously escaped. (Which you can bet happened after the ones who were too big to mess with were released and the rest given a good shake down.)

But, lo and behold, they managed to seize the gambling equipment.

Anyone like to make a wager that it will be set up by this evening in the facilities of another operator who will make the appropriate donations to the appropriate people?

Oh, wait... sorry. Gambling is illegal.

This is where I live.

'Blind eyes' have been turned for years on the underworld in this district. Selective pursuit of those 'not in the club' is rampant.

Criminals in all trades operate with immunity and impunity, clearly through strong associations with guardian angels dressed in brown.

So, here's hoping for a full cull. A root and branch clean-out. Wonder how squeaky-clean the replacement will be?

And will he be selected from within the district, or be a freshly laundered outsider?

Just read the article again, and answered my own question.

Successor is from within the districtwhistling.gif .
