Community Phuket Drowning in Rubbish as Daily Waste Tops 1,200 Tons
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Phuket is facing a mounting waste crisis as daily rubbish has surged past 1,200 tons, overwhelming the island’s sole incinerator which can process only 500 tons per day. Phuket City Mayor Suppachoke Laongpetch visited the Phuket Provincial Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Centre alongside Deputy Mayor Chalermpon Piyanarongroj to assess the situation. Waste is currently being delivered from all 19 local administrative organisations and government agencies across the province, creating severe strain on the system. Officials confirmed that landfill sites 4 and 5 are now at full capacity, leaving staff with no choice but to manage the overflow on a day-to-day basis. Representatives from the Solid Waste and Excreta Management Group and Phuket City Municipality’s Engineering Department joined the inspection. Mayor Suppachoke revealed that Thai Paiboon Equipment (TPB) Co., Ltd. has so far removed around 75,000 tons of accumulated landfill waste. However, he urged the company to accelerate operations due to concerns that the forthcoming high season in tourism, along with ongoing economic expansion, will add further pressure to an already stretched waste management system. “The volume of waste is increasing every day. If urgent measures are not taken, Phuket could face a serious environmental and public health challenge,” Mayor Suppachoke warned. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-22 -

Report Bangkok Shaken by Earthquake, No Serious Damage Reported
Not at all really... The Epicentre to Bangkok distance: Using the Thai Meteorological Department’s reported epicentre at 16.145°N, 96.686°E (5.4 M, depth ~10 km, 09:58 local) and central Bangkok at 13.756°N, 100.502°E, the great-circle distance is ≈ 490 km. The potentail shaking in Bangkok (with basin amplification): Given the MV 7.7 Sagaing Fault quake in Mandalay, some 1000 km north of Bangkok resulted in an relative equivalent MV 6.0 (max) in some area's of Bangkok, the relative MV of this latest 5.4 quake can be estimated. The MV 5.4 quake of the Southern coast of Myanmar, some 490 km from Bangkok would give an estimated relative equivalent of MV 3.5 in Bangkok when attempting to 'shake map' an estimate accounting for Bangkoks soft, deep alluvial clays that amplify long-period waves ~2–4× and lengthen their duration. So... an equivalent MV 3.5 quake might be felt by some... thats about it. Also note: the photo is not from 'this quake'... -
