OBEC: More than 8,000 CCTV cameras to be installed in southern schools

BANGKOK, 30 July 2014, (NNT) - The Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC) is preparing to install more than 8,000 CCTV cameras in schools in the South.

According to the Office, to provide additional security for the students and school staff, CCTVs will be installed in about 1,000 schools in the 3 southernmost provinces and 4 districts in Songkla Province; 443 among which are currently deemed to have been exposed to separatists’ violent attacks. The Office expected the installation to be completed in two weeks' time.

Meanwhile, the Deep South Watch of Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, has released its annual report on violent incidents occurring during the holy month of Ramadan in the provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, indicating that 77 incidents were reported this year, a slight decrease from last year's figure of 86; however, the number of casualties rose from 134 reported last year to 158 this year.

Thailand would have to be one of the most CCTV'd places in the world wouldn't it? In this region, next to China, who'd have the most? Dunno what it's like in Singapore though. Total overkill though, with big advertisements up around the place in Thai telling everyone how lucky they are to have their taxes put to such good use.

Now with this many cameras, presumably coming for one or 2 suppliers in somewhere like China...with such a massive order...I bet that was a lucrative deal for whoever got to oversee it. Wink, wink, nudge nudge. Anyway does anyone know how much it was likely to have cost?

Who woulda thunk it?
