Can one get good car rental insurance - that doesn't have you paying 35% of the value if totaled?.

Hello,

We are looking to rent a simple used car for 6-12 months in Thailand and want to have it fully insured.  Is it possible to more or less fully insure a car (a small deductible is fine)?

We've checked with a couple rental agencies and it seems even with the premium insurance we would be responsible for roughly 35% of the value of the car if it were stolen, caught fire or was otherwise totaled?  Seems excessive.  Any advice or specific rental agencies much appreciated.

Thank You!

Hi Steve. Which country are you from?

Many travel insurances have a 'Rental Car Insurance excess' benefit.

E.g., if you are liable to pay the excess on a motor vehicles insurance policy, it would cover you somewhere between $3-10,000 (AUD in my situation). This essentially takes the wind away from most rental companies' main upsell.
