Marriage in Thailand or Australia

Featured Replies

I have been fortunate to find the right thai woman who ticks all the good points we look for. She has had two tourist visas to Australia. We are now looking at marriage and a spouse visa. Have seen some posts on whether it's best to be married in Thailand or Australia for visa/immigration purposes and am keen to get feedback on the experience and advice from the Thaivisa community. Whilst the question is concerning the spouse visa am interested in all perspectives on the pros and cons of the two options especially from those who have been through it all. Thanks everyone.

I honestly don't believe DIAC give any weight to the idea of it being more advantageous to be married in Australia or maried in Thailand. As long as the marriage is registered with the Amphur (District Office) it is accepted and recognised as a legally binding marriage.

The only issue - so far as I can see - is the translation and certification of the paperwork (pre-wedding: your paperwork and post-wedding: both your paperwork), in the grand scheme of things it's not that difficult. Time consuming? Yes. Frustrating? At times for sure, Mind numbing? Absolutely. Will you want to setup a migration service centre once you finish the process? If all else fails :P.

But for the purposes of immigration matters, rather inconsequential.

FWIW, I haven't gone through the process yet - a number of TV members have or are waiting for outcomes - but when my turn comes, I'll be doing it here in Bangkok.

My wife and I were married in oz and going through the partner visa process now.It doesnt change a thing whether married in Australia or Thailand.

Your could try a prospective marriage visa, it gives you time to get to oz and get married in 9 months. Quicker processing time then a partner visa. Maybe cheaper not having the family around in oz for a sin sod :-)

Tony ... there is no 'Spouse' Visa ... Australia being ever so PC ... it's a 'Partner Visa'.

Currently my gf has applied for one in Thailand.

It's about $1,000 cheaper to have the Partner Visa processed in Thailand.

Apparently, you can do the application 'on-line' ... though I've not read a report of anyone doing it that way.

My justifications are personal ... but my advice would be to get married in Thailand.
