Surrogacy doctor does not report to Lardprao police

BANGKOK: -- The doctor who owned the All IVF clinic which performed commercial surrogacy for foreign couples illegally did not show up to defend illegal surrogacy charge as he earlier pledged to come today.

An army of both local and foreign news media journalists waited in vain at the police station after the doctor, Dr Pisit Tantiwattanasakul, owner of the All IVF clinic on Ploenchit, did not show up for questioning.

Only his lawyer showed up with request to put off meeting until October 4, reasoning that he has to take care of his sick father.

However police chief investigator Pol Col Decha Promsuwan said he told the lawyer that the police could only allow him to defer the questioning only till September 10.
If he does not come on September 10, then a warrant may be issued to arrest him, the officer said.

He said the police have given him enough time to prepare himself for questioning.

The officer also revealed that three surrogate mothers who have earlier offered to give testimony also have not showed up.

He said two of them promised to see the police on Thursday but did not come.

He said the police might have to summon them for questioning.

Another surrogate mother has contacted the police saying she was inconvenient to come to Bangkok, he said, and added that the police have formally asked the provincial police to undertake the questioning and file the report back to Lardprao police later.

The doctor was also accused of performing surrogacy for the 24-year-old Japanese father Mitsutoki Shigeta whose mystery surrounding him has riveted Thailand and has become the focal point of a growing scandal over commercial surrogacy.

The industry that catered to foreigners has thrived on semisecrecy, deception and legal loopholes, and Thailand’s military government is vowing to shut it down.

Shigeta is being investigated for human trafficking and child exploitation, but Thai police say they haven’t found evidence of either. The 24-year-old, now the focus of an Asiawide investigation, has said through a lawyer that he simply wanted a big family.

He has not been charged with any crime and is trying to get his children back — 12 are currently in Thailand being cared for by social services.

His whereabouts are unknown; he left Bangkok after police raided his condominium August 5 and discovered nine babies living with nine nannies.

Police say he sent DNA samples from Japan proving he is their father.

Key to unraveling all of this are the women he paid to bear his children.

Now there is a surprise, the doctor did not show. What is not a surprise is the police negotiated a further extension rather than doing their job and offering a free(ish) ride in one of their special taxis to the station so the kind doctor can assist them with their inquiries. On the other hand they could do the interview at the doctor's place while they are executing a search warrant to look for relevant information, a bunch of plods stomping through his house would assist his memory no end.

These sort of practices...surrugate babies, stem cell therapies, steroids and countless other ethically or scientifically dodgy medical procedures require an acquiescent doctor or doctors, and those thinking of taking any medical procedure in Thailand should bear in mind how common these sort of "shadowy" ethics are before they literally put their lives on the line.

Doctor in surrogacy case seeks more time
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Lumpini Police Station chief Pol Colonel Decha Promsuwan said yesterday Dr Pisit Tantiwattanakul, director of the All IVF Clinic, reportedly excused himself from a hearing on the surrogacy case, which involves a Japanese man who allegedly fathered over a dozen children.

Pisit is scheduled to meet the police today to hear the charges levelled against him. However, his lawyer told the police yesterday that the clinic owner wanted a 30-day respite so he could take care of his father, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

The doctor also wants to find himself a new lawyer.

Police, however, have only agreed to offer an extension until Wednesday and if Pisit fails to turn up on that day, an arrest warrant will be sought for him, Decha said.

Meanwhile, the Wieng Chiang Rung Police Station in Chiang Rai province reported the existence of another surrogate mother, though she is unable to provide testimony as she has recently given birth.

Two other surrogate mothers cannot be contacted, as the one who lived in Pathum Thani province has reportedly moved to an unknown address in Chon Buri province, while the other one who lives in Chon Buri is unreachable.

" hello doctor this is Lumpini police and we'ed like to talk to you about these surrogate births but there's absolutely no rush, whenever suits you will be just fine.

It's an important case with international implications but don't let that worry you because it doesn't concern us . "
