The folks at The Gate Theater Group are trying something quite interesting and different.

On next Friday, September 12, they will join forces with The River Market restaurant to present a dinner theater performance of their most recent production called "Love Letters". You can read a synopses of the play here.

I saw the show at AUA about 3 weeks ago and it was a marvelous evening of entertainment. I highly recommend it! I'll be going again and taking a few friends who will be visiting from Chiang Rai. They don't have an English language theater troupe up there so they are supporters of Chiang Mai's Gate Theater as I am.

The dinner look delicious:

Appetiser Choice of,

Seafood Cocktail (Shrimp and Crab) or Thai Sausage With Jalapeño and Sharp Cheddar or Butternut Squash Lettuce Wrap

Caesar Salad or Caprese

Pink Snapper With Sun Dried Tomato Sauce or Filet with Gorgonzola or Mushroom Ragu Cannelloni

Coconut Flan and Caramel Cheese Cake

Since The Dukes and River Market are sponsors of Thai Visa, I don't think it would do any harm to post their flyer. I'm sure the moderators will remove it if it is a problem.

Unable to make it.

Where I came from the town had a diner theater with about four shows a year. It was fantastic.

Back in Vancouver they had several of them.

I enjoy plays but the fact that you can have a meal while you watch them gives it a whole new feeling.

Sorry you can't make this one NJ. But do spread the word. The Gate folks are trying very hard to keep a good thing going for the good citizens of Chiang Mai.

How much are the tickets? Would you have to choose from this list of dishes or could you order something separate if you are a vegan for example?

It's in small print, but the poster says the tickets are 900 baht, which is a good value for the show, the meal and one "adult" beverage from the bar. Looks like you have a choice of two or more options for each course, with one of the options being vegetarian.

We'll be there for the show and dinner at River Market. Missed it at AUA and now I'm glad we did!

Perhaps David could add a little something special to your plate if there isn't enough on the menu that you can eat. Maybe he'll read this and chime in with an answer???

The Gate's production of Love Letters is professional quality community theater.

The writing, directing, and acting are superb. The show was excellent when I saw it at AUA in August and should be quite enjoyable as dinner theater on September 12 at the River Market.

I did a vegetarian alternative but we can rework it to leave the cheese out or I can do you something special. Not a problem. Let someone know when you buy your tickets, Chan, the manager, at The River Market, Prey our event manager or Stephan, who runs the Gate Theatre. Or if anyone else has any other dietary requirements. Extra fatty meal or sodium laden or anything else, no gluten. Maybe someone juste wants to drink dinner. You get where I'm going.

This is something we are trying. The 900 Baht includes the dinner and a drink and the event.

I am so happy that Love Letters is going to play again..I missed it at A.U.A.

We will definitely see it at the River Market. WOW a dinner theater, that is new to Chiang Mai, a welcomed edition.

Thanks for bringing it back.

Okay, all you vegans, vegetarians and carnivorous ones, Dave has spoken!

There's something for everyone on the menu. Let's get out and support Chiang Mai's only English Language Theater Group and the River Market as they attempt to do something special in Chiang Mai. I've been around these parts for ten years and there has never been entertainment like this available for native English speakers. You'd have to travel to Bangkok to see anything comparable and you'd be paying a lot more to do so. The Bangkok Community Theater has been in business for forty years and they started out just like the folks at The Gate. Support your local artists. Art is good!
