1year married to a Thai girl = residency?

Hello!

One of my friend has gotten involved with a Thai girl who has offered to marry him for 5000thb per month during 1year. He needs a visa and his workplace does not provide him with a work permit. She told him they could get divorced after a year, and that he would be able to keep his Thai residency if during that year of marriage he was behaving well and merging well in the Thai community. I think she is a gold digger who cannot wait to get pregnant and get him stuck. But before accusing her of being a whore and a liar, I ´m checking with my ThaiVisa friends first . Have you heard of a anyone keeping his Thai residency after divorcing his Thai wife? Thank you very much for your answers.

First point - Permanent Residency status for Thailand is not granted to anybody:

- Simply on the basis of being married to a Thai person (marriage as a means of gaining PR or even citizenship can be true in some other countries but not Thailand).

- Therefore the 'one year' point is redundant.

Further:

- PR for Thailand can be achieved by: single people, people (male or female) married to a Thai person and a person / couple who are both not Thai.

- It is NOT based simply on how many years you have physically been in Thailand.

- There is a long and very informative thread at the start of the ThaiVisa website re PR. This thread mentions all the qualifying criteria for PR, note that

work permits and payment of taxes over quite a few years are key, plus further items. Please take a look.

Also, as in any country, marriages of convenience are illegal, if caught. Marriages of convenience are great set ups for controlling people / blackmail.

I suppose 5000thb would have been her pocket money as they would have lived together and he would have had to pay for the rent.... All that, along with a Thai marriage that would allow him to stay in Thailand. I think it is a very good deal!

Try taking a long-look @ 50-year demographic of "educated" western expats of SE Asia, who have repeatedly, and resoundingly (even despite being given sound legal advice) earned for themselves, a lifetime membership in the Richard Forbrain Society.

Thai women are not committing suicide (on an average of one, per week), resulting from a failed relationship with a Farang! Thoughout the decades, Thai women (in particular) have earned for themselves, a global reputation for being some of the smoothest "grifters" on the planet. Books have been written about this phenomenon of western menfolk, losing their entire life's earnings, to some (supposedly) stupid Thai girl, from the country province of Isaan.
