Car hire ID requirements and payment

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered before but I am due to coming from the UK to BKK for 3 months in December and I'm thinking of renting a car.

Can someone who has done this before advise me what the ID requirements are for car hire companies in Thailand. I will obviously have my Passport, International Drivers Permit, Driving Licence Photo ID card to show them but do they also need the paper counterpart driving licence as well and are any other documents required ?

Finally, if I book a car online at todays pound/baht exchange rate will that be what they will charge me on arrival or will it be the baht charge on the day of collection?

If hiring from a international hire company you will need a credit card and most will take a 20,000 baht deposit+

I usually hire from highway car rent on rama 4, easy 2000 baht cash deposit but they will want proof of where you are staying and they don't speak much English.

Thanks Colin, I looked at the Highway Car rental website and there are no prices quoted so I guess I'll have to get my Thai wife to phone them for that. Can you recall what ID (apart from CC) they wanted?
