Villagers face further flood threat

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department yesterday reported that rain-triggered floods that ravaged Ranong, Trat and Prachin Buri provinces since early this week have improved and the situation had returned to normal.

But the National Disaster Warning Centre warned that Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun may experience flash flooding and landslides over the next few days.

In Chumphon's Pato district, two sections on the Ranong-Lang Suan highway number 4006 were under 40cm-deep floodwaters, making the highway impassable for low sedans.

Meanwhile, 100 homes in two villages in Chaiyaphum's Ban Khwao were hit by forest run-offs early yesterday morning. The villages had just recovered from a two-week flood and residents now have to brace for more possible flooding due to the Kalmaegi typhoon, which struck upper Vietnam and will later last night be downgraded to a depression.

As the storm will bring rains to the north and north-east, the Royal Irrigation Department's Centre for Water Situation Analysis and Computing reported yesterday via its Facebook page that the major northern dams were ready for the upcoming dry season. Tak's Bhumibol Dam is at 38 per cent capacity, Uttaradit's Sirikit Dam is at 54 per cent, Phitsanulok's Kwai Noi Dam is at 61 per cent and Lop Buri's Pa Sak Jolasid Dam is at 62 per cent, the centre said.

The Chao Phraya River level was normal; Nakhon Sawan saw it run at 845 cubic metres per second (capacity is 3,590) at 5.59 metres below the riverbank, the centre said, Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district saw it run at 1,285 cubic metres per second (capacity is 3,500) at 2.5 metres below the riverbank.

Quick - shut the dams!

Those capacity percentages seem very low with one month at best of rains yet to come.
