More CCTV cameras in capital and tourist spots nationwide

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok and tourist towns in the country will have more CCTV cameras installed to ensure full security for the people and tourists, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said today.

The increase of surveillance cameras came in the wake of the murder of two British tourists in Koh Tao where lack of adequate lighting on the beach poses crime risk for tourists.

Gen Prawit said the murder occurred in a dark area where there were no surveillance cameras watching.

He ordered the Ministry of Interior, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the police to improve lighting and security camera coverage in major tourist spots nationwide.

He said the murder occurred in a very dark area where local CCTV could not capture a picture there.

“So I have ordered sufficient lighting nationwide. There must be enough light, especially in Bangkok and big tourist cities, and there must be closed circuit television cameras nationwide,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Interior, the BMA and police accepted the order for implementation and he was confident that it would take shape in two months.

Gen Prawit also rejected reports that influential people were obstructing the investigation into the murder of tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller on Koh Tao on Sept 15.

He said investigation was now under the control of very senior police officers.

It was mention a few days ago that 176 CCTV would be installed. Are they sticking to that woeful number or will they find the money for more?

Why? It's not as if an influential Thai will ever be brought to justice even if caught on camera. Come on, guys. Pull your heads out of your asses!

It's a great idea, bit please DO first than use it for your advertising and not opposite.

If these hundred thousands of cameras will start with face recognition and citizenprofiling I wonder how happy is everyone with their CCTVs

Real cameras or dummies.

Sure! How many of these actually work... i.e. are actually connected to something?
