BOI approves more investment plans

BANGKOK, 4 Oct 2014, (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula (ปรีดิยาธร เทวกุล) stresses that the government policy to provide a supporting fund of 1,000 baht per rai for rice farmers is not a populist policy. Meanwhile, the Board of Investment (BOI) has approved 20 more large-scale investment projects.

Deputy Prime Minister M.R. Pridiyathorn explained that the support is merely a part of the administration’s economic stimulus package, saying the move would be able to generate income faster than the traditional employment method.

He stated that Thailand is set to become a hub for eco car production in the Southeast Asian region, in the Government’s 2nd Phase of eco car investment promotion campaign.

He also mentioned that the BOI would now shift its focus to concentrate on providing support for a particular type of industry at a time. The Deputy Prime Minister said at the moment Thailand may need to promote more rubber related projects, citing a plan to establish ‘Rubber City’, a rubber industrial estate in the South.

He is confident the move would attract more foreign investments. Currently 86% of the rubber output is being exported.

Meanwhile, the BOI has approved 20 more investment projects worth nearly 90 billion baht. Most of them involve eco car and energy production.

Baht is expected to remain weakened next week
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Oct 4 -- The Thai baht is projected to remain weakened during next week after it slipped to 32.50 baht per US dollar on Friday, its weakest position in the past three months, according to a report issued by Kasikorn Research Centre.

The Centre has projected that the Thai baht is expected to move between 32.35 – 32.65 baht per dollar next week as traders cautiously watch dollar movements early in the week while they take into account the latest U.S. employment data.

A report issued by the US Labor Department on Friday said US jobless rate declined to a six-year low of 5.9 per cent in September and that employers hired more workers than projected.

The unemployment rate fell to the lowest level since July 2008, down from 6.1 per cent.

Traders are also closely monitoring the US Federal Reserve and the number of unemployed applying for weekly welfare so that they could assess the direction of US interest rate, according to the Centre report.

The baht remained weak throughout this week due to buying of US dollar before the end of the third quarter and on concerns over the ongoing unrest situation in Hong Kong which has already depressed Asian currencies, it said.

Also, the baht was weak in line with net selling in the bond market and Thai equities by foreign investors while the greenback strengthened late in the week as investors adjusted their positions, the Centre added. (MCOT online news)

PM instructs all gov’t units to take precaution against cold weather

BANGKOK, 4 October 2014 (NNT) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha noted in his weekly television programme, “Returning Happiness to the People” that Thailand has already entered the cold season that possibly causes health-related risks.

The cold may cause deaths in the North and the Northeast as has been the case. He consequently commanded all local administrations to closely monitor the situation and observe precautions against the disaster in order to ensure a limited loss of life and property.

During the winter, the Prime Minister said farmers will be asked to avoid off-season rice planting, but cultivate field crops and vegetables that need less water since the volume of remaining water in all dams and reservoirs is sufficient only for household use. In the meantime, the government will try to create other jobs for farmers so that they can earn substitution incomes.

Gen. Prayut also underlined that prices of agricultural products remain fluctuated. He then urged workers to develop their working skills so that they can earn higher than the minimum wage. He said skill development will also benefit workers as they are about to compete with others in the ASEAN Community to be formed very soon.
