I too have the problem to my favorite helmet. But like the other guy said you need to have two helmets.

My favorite I clean each month using LIQUOR LAUNDRY DETERGENT ESSENCE. PUT SOME IN FILL WITH WATER AND USE HAND MOTION TO CLEAN. REPEAT PROCESS A NUMBER OF TIMES AND RINSE AND THEN LEAVE IN SUN TO DRY.

GOOD LUCK!

I recently purchased a new helmet only to use when I ride on a motorcycle taxi for short trips. I didn't like to use the ones that the taxis carry for passengers. My motorcycle taxi friend took me to a large helmet shop on Rama 4 Road not far from Sukhumvit Road here in Bangkok. On the way home I noticed an unpleasant smell and when I got home and took it off I smelled the inside and like the OP stated it had a terrible odor and it was brand new. To me it appeared to be from the curing of the resin the helmet was made of. So like others I took out the lining and soaked the foam liner in detergent and thoroughly scrubbed and wiped the entire helmet itself and inside and out. It is now almost impossible to smell the odor but still has a tell tell trace of it. So like others that are claiming it is from poor hygiene and from sweating, I do not buy that, at least in my case and possibly the OP case also. I believe it is the curing of the material resin it is made from.

For stinking helmets wash or replace the liner. And if that doesnt help put the whole helmet in a big basin with detergent. Can help a lot. But best is to buy a new one after 3 years.

If you have a half decent helmet or you really like the cheap and dangerous one so many wear here, try www.ThaiAntinoc.co.th -- they re-line helmets at a very reasonable cost. They are situated in Bangkok and offer a return by post service. As an example, they replaced the linings in our two Roof helmets and they only took two days to do it -- one of the days being a sunday.

They are also stockists ( if not the manufacturers ) of Stars Helmets who have a range of more than 50 types of helmet.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but what about the best way to clean your visor? Please don't say a mixture of water and vinegar.

Here is how i do it:

I first wash the visor in the washbasin with clear water using the bare fingers to remove dust and grime. With your bare hands you have a good feeling not to scratch your visor when removing the dirt. Do it gently and use a lot of fresh, running water. Then i use a tiny bit of soap on the fingers to get rid of the grease smearing. Then rinse it with fresh water and gently tap the remaining water of. Or use a clean towel to dab the water of. Do not wipe on the visor with the towel or you will get lots of tiny scratches.

Like this my visors are like new for a long time. The only scratches are from bugs who sometimes crash into the visor.

BUT: Use these instructions at your own risk laugh.png

Holy crap...

If you need advice on cleaning a helmet, I shudder to think what you must smell like...

If its dirty or smells, clean it... If you need the ingredients... water, soap solution and rag.... Not much different to cleaning a nutsack

hahaha cheesy.gif

I was hoping I could buy some sort of glass cleaner made specially to clean the visor without taking it off, another poster said maybe computer screen cleaner, I will check his post again.

Easy. you need two. use helmet #2 when helmet one is drying out after it's been thoroughly hosed out with various stages of washing detergent and fabric softner. Repeat the cycle when the other helmet stinks out and repeat procedure for the other lid.

When the lining falls apart, replace. The secret to the answer was in the question (cheap lids).

There are specialist visor cleaners, supposedly they do a demising job on the visor too.

I have one that came with my oxford panniers, it makes streaks which then have to be polished out, and I guess the demising quality is some kind of shiny residue that prevents droplets adhering.

I like the orange-peel foam cleaner, it gets under the crud / bugs and lifts without needing a fingernail, which is what takes of the mirror coating ( for me )

You can wash the visor like i described without taking it of if the washbasin/watertap is big/high enough. Try it and you will see what i mean. But you can only wash the outside then, inside is more difficult, never tried it without taking the visor of. But outside is what is most important. Inside of visor only needs cleaning from time to time.

Spray it down with half water half isopropyl alcohol after each daily use. No germs, no smell.

If you have a housekeeper, have her do it in addition to wiping down your car seats (kids are crumb factories), toilet seats (bum guns make for all kinds of shrapnel type issues), and trash cans (sorry geckos).

Washing the helmet is easy, just about any combination of soap and water will do. The hard part is to getting the inside to completely dry in a humid climate, especially in the rainy season. If the sun is out then aim the inside of the helmet at the sun after washing. But best to finish the drying off by placing the helmet in front of a fan over for a few hours.

I have a collection of lids, an two excellent lids and a few cheap ones. The cheap ones get used on the roads in my local area, the ones just within a few km's of home. The good lids get used on longer trips, along the big roads. The cheap ones of get left on the bike or out of sight for short periods the expensive ones never leave my sight.

As Murphys would have it, I will get K.O. ed when I am wearing the cheap lid........which will at least give them the option to bury me in my expensive lid if my face is too messed up :P

In the old days, I use to ride everywhere with just my James dean sunglasses as my face was too pretty to be covered up. The girls use to love seeing my face.....these days they scream at me to cover it up. :)

My parents use to tell me I was going to die on the bike in bangers decades ago, still waiting for that....these days I mainly enjoy the comfort of a lid to keep the dust and grime out of my old withering eyes.....most people seem to be keen to get out of my way when I ride and I doubt very much I'm going to die on the roads here in LOS, helmet or no helmet......there's an art to surviving & it's got nothing to do with the lid.

Now get out of my way ;)

I'm thinking about producing an Air Conditioned Helmet....small back-pack compressor etc attached to the helmet.

Want to invest? Reckon we could make a fortune!

I saw your other invention.....motorcycle ashtray. :P

A refrigerated helmet that could deliver cold Chang directly to the riders mouth would probably sell more units here in LOS. Make it reflective for safety reasons of course ;)

I used to have crappy Thai helmets but washing it was effort, because if your using it daily you should be washing it weekly.

You need to get 1 of these from Sharp. Plasmacluster Ion Generator Just put your helmet on it, turn it on, take it off 8hrs later nice and fresh again.

Info from their website.

Plasmacluster Ion technology releases both positive and negative ions into the air. The cluster ions diffuse through, surrounding airborne allergens, turning them into harmless substances like water. The benefits of using the IGCH2JW for your helmet are eliminating unpleasant lingering odours. It also has an excellent performance against mould growth and bacteria.

I got it a couple of years ago in Singapore the same time I got my NEXX Carbon XR1R helmet. I think that was about ฿20k+ so the Plasmacluster thingy was probably ฿2-3k. It's not cheap but definitely worth it, Assuming you got the real gear and not the local <deleted>. And no more washing 5555 attachicon.gifImageUploadedByThaivisa Connect Thailand1412527085.243714.jpgattachicon.gifImageUploadedByThaivisa Connect Thailand1412527098.802151.jpgattachicon.gifImageUploadedByThaivisa Connect Thailand1412527111.286542.jpg

Many people say that Real and Bilmola are not "local crap", how you call it. But i dont know what you owned and of course if you spent 20k on your nice carbon helmet you somehow want to justify it.

So this plasma thingy really works? You did not wash your helmet for years and wore it daily? No stank? Even no stank after a long ride before you put it on the Plasmacluster? Would like to hear more about it.

I wear a Forcefield Balaclava with my touring helmet. My scooter helmets get washed more frequently because no balaclava. Too much hassle wearing it for short rides.

Not sure if the lining can be replaced, I have never seen helmet's lining sold separately,

but the idea of having a second helmet could work...

No mate, I didn't mean replace the lining on the cheap helmet but rather.....replace the entire helmet.

For years I've run a series of lids all in various states of cleaning....eventually they need to be tossed in the rubbish.

There was one cheap lid being sold in LOS, which I think u could buy new linings for, real helmets?

You could also try wearing a silk balaclava when wearing the helmet, it helps reduce sweat into the helmets liner and it's easily washed daily after use.

Stinking lids, got heaps of em smile.png

A cheap lid is for decoration purposes only.I wear a cotton hat under the expensive helmet, can be bought at any market.

Ok Wantone

In my opinion Real is crap, I have had a few before, I found them uncomfortable, poor visibility, but most of all it was HEAVY.

I don't know why or what you think I'm trying to justify. My helmet? The plasmacluster? Or how much I spent? Please enlighten me.

Yes the plasmacluster thingy really works. You plug it in and turn it on, it's quite simple really.

I have taken the inner lining out once and washed it, just out of curiosity to see if there was any adverse effects when re-attaching the Velcro.

No not daily, I have a car, I prefer to sit in traffic, nicely dry and comfortable when it rains. It's also a lot safer than my bike in the wet.

"No 'stank' after a long ride before you put it on the plasmacluster?". This really is a stupid question so I can't give you a serious answer other than, After you wear your clothes, do they smell nice and clean BEFORE you put them in the washing machine. If so, then why use a washing machine?

Go and by 1 if you'd like to hear more about it, but you'll probably just ask google because maybe it's over your monthly budget.

But seriously, It works well for me because all I have to do is turn it on, let it do its thing, then turn it off, and my helmet is fresh.

I'm not at the sink, pulling the inner lining out, scrubbing the 'stank' away, trying to dry it out properly, then putting it back in again but never quite the same fitment as before.

Relining and ending up better than the original can be carried out (I have used them for Shoei) by the following place:

'Million Star helmet shop.

389-391 Luang Road/Yukhon 2 Road

Call the shop on 02 221 4358, or 02 222 4727

Their website: http://www.thaiantinoc.co.th/

In addition to the above. Every time I've been in this place, there are policemen collecting or dropping off their helmets for refurbishment

And do you know how much they charge for full lining for shoei?

And how is their work? Durable?

Thanks a lot.
