Ultrasound on my lower legs.

Featured Replies

I have been having pain in my calves when walking. My daughter-in-law (Dr of PT) suggested I get an ultrasound. She said it should be cheap. Any suggestions on where? I guess Bangkok HP would certainly have it but is it necessary to go to a hospital?

It's an inexpensive procedure done at most hospitals, under THB 500 or so in Chiang Mai.

Presumably the concern is that it might be DVT? But I would have thought that leg pain whilst walking was either something to do with nerves in the lower spine or dehydration, perhaps better to consult with an orthopedic doctor first and be driven by what he/she suggests?

All she said was the ultrasound is too cheap to ignore. It wasn't sudden onset so my luck it will be chronic. One of those "tough $$$t) situations.

You can consult with a decent ortho. for under 500 baht, perhaps if you tell us where you're located somebody can provide recommendations. DVT would be unlikely to affect both calves at the same time, also, DVT usually has redness, an area of tenderness and pain whilst at rest although sometimes there are no symptoms.

Actually what you need is a vascular specialist, not an ortho, and you are unlikely to find this at a clinic.

Bear in mind that ultrasounds, like other tests, do not "read" themselves. They are only as useful as the skill of the person viewing them. There are also simple physical examinations that can be made and may be helpful in diagnosis, such as comparing pulses at different points on the feet and legs.

What you need to rule out is peripheral arterial disease (claudication), see http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/claudication/basics/definition/con-20033581

Blood clot or phlebitis also needs to be excluded but is unlikely if both calves are affected.

If it is claudication it is potentially serious so do not delay.

I suggest you try Phyathai Sri Racha and ask if they have a vascular specialist. Email [email protected]

It sounds like claudication to me.

I live in the center of the universe. Jomtien.

It's not a big problem to go to Chonburi. Is there anyplace closer? Is Sri Racha known for it's Vascular clinic?

No, not especially, it is just probably the best/most affordable private option in your area.

And their international relations person (Gavin) is very helpful and good about taking the time to find the best doctor for a particular situation/need.
