Fight over water between two groups of farmers in Ayutthaya

BANGKOK: -- A fight over water was reported today in Ayutthaya province between main-crop rice farmers and second-crop rice farmers.

A complaint was lodged with Nakhon Luang district’s irrigation chief Mr Kritrit Bussapan by a group of rice farmers of Nakhon Luang and Bang Pahan district led by Mr Narong Inchan, a kamnan of Tambon Bang Ploeng, Bang Pahan district.

The complainants said that their 3,000 rai of main crop were running out of water because some farmers who wanted to start cultivating the second crop had secretly opened the Klong Phra Ram sluice gate in Tambon Koh Lerng, Bang Pahan district, to discharge water out of their farmland into the Lop Buri river to prepare the ground for second-crop cultivation.

They said that it was normal at this time of the year that their farmland was flooded and their rice plants were in need of water.

After having received the complaint, irrigation officials padlocked the sluice gate and posted a sign banning any unauthorized personnel to open the gate. In the meantime, five water pumps were dispatched to pump water from the Lop Buri river into the main-crop rice fields to save the rice plants.

The Royal Irrigation Department announced on October 7 that it would stop releasing water from four main dams into the Chao Phraya river basin to discourage second-crop cultivation due to acute shortage of water.

Songkran has started already ???

greed will never end, screw everyone else when money is involved. Just goes to show that even the farmers are not below screwing their neighbours when they want to, especially if it means a bit more cash to them.

So the farmers just go round opening sluice gates whenever it suits their needs?

Wow.

Wow.

you should have seen 2011....open gates, close gates, open here close there by random people. 2011 I would have trusted Mr. Somchai Lao Khao common sense ideas more than the government officials.

Theft of water is not a real surprise is it.

I mean normally every day people take other peoples stuff home to stop it being stolen

Whats the difference with the water? Its just there so use it.
