Insurgents set fire to six Pattani schools

PATTANI: -- Muslim insurgents set fire to six schools in Pattani late Saturday night and early Sunday, police said. Five schools were torched in Thung Yang Daeng district and another in Mayor district.

Most of the attacked schools were burnt to the ground and could not resume classes soon. Ban Duboh school in Thung Yang Daeng was the one that did not suffer much damage as village defence volunteers put out the fire shortly after the arson.

I have never been quite sure why these incidents are always referred to as an insurgency rather than as terrorism. Is there a reason for this or is related to the more negative connotation of using the word terrorism?

The Fort Hood murders are called work place violence by the US government. It is hard to maintain a no terrorism happens on my watch slogen if there is.

The terroists work best with people that THEY educate their way, hence burning down schools and MURDERING teachers and schoolchildren. The especially hate it when women get educated as it cuts the ground away from under them.

They know that the E in WIFE doesn't stand for education.

And I remember to have read in TV that our dear PM declared that the situation in the South was improving.

Maybe he was saying the South Pole?

Can't keep their trap shut for one minute, Thai arrogance is inbred, comes from all the decades of ignorance.

This is most disturbing! Do they want a Taliban society?

I heard that the Religious Police in Saudi Arabia drove teenage girls escaping a fire back into the burning school.

It'sd preferable they die a horrible death versus being seen in some state of undress. Sick perverts if you ask me - placing prostitutes in "paradise" and wanting stone-age "education".

Some middle aged teacher driving home on a Honda Dream - she's not an oppressor or agitator for a hostile regime.

Hope they catch the Mullahs or whoever the "spiritual leaders" are who say doing this will please a kind God.

It's the terrorist way. Instil fear into the younger generations - like attack their schools. I'd sure like to see an attempt at such in the US or the UK nowadays - with such increased intelligence post 9/11 - they'd be shot dead in seconds, and every moment of their movements would be known about, way before such an attempt.

In short, the Muslim terrorists are at the losing end in the West, so now they try to infiltrate the developing countries, as money speaks.

Poor show guys - you should take on the battle against the West YOU started, and see exactly how far you get now. Then again, you can't even make the news or any noise in the West... forget - bunch of twisted losers.

Six schools in Pattani torched in an act of retaliation by separatists

10-12-2014-3-27-51-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

PATTANI: -- The torching of six schools in Pattani province early Sunday morning was believed to be a retaliation by the separatists against recent military operations which resulted in the killing of a one core separatist leader and the seizure of several illegal items, said Colonel Winthai Suwaree, spokesman of the Royal Thai Army.

He disclosed that Army Commander-in-Chief General Udomdej Seetabur had expressed serious concern with the incident and instructed Lt-Gen Prakarn Cholayuth, commander of the Fourth Army Region, to help compensate for the damages and to boost the morale of the affected.

The army chief, he added, is overwhelmed with work and cannot visit the Deep South for the time being but would hold a meeting with authorities concerned through video conference on Monday to discuss the unrest problem.

Pattani deputy governor Mr Sompote Suwannanrat, meanwhile, conducted a field inspectioin of the six torched schools in Mayor and Yang Daeng districts. He said that the exact estimate of the damages could not be determined now but most of the buildings in the six schools were damaged beyond repairs.

Villagers, he said, helped save some of the buildings which were half-damaged.

The arson attacks were meant to destroy properties rather than hurting teachers of officials. Volunteers who guarded the schools were tied up before the separatists poured gasoline around the school buildings before setting it alight.

The Government has been most insistent on the use of the term "insurgent" rather than terrorist as insurgent suggest that it is a minor skirmish, whilst if they called them terrorist, which they truly are, then one would be forced to concede that there is a civil war going on for over 2 decades in the South and that would not auger well for tourism. If I recall correctly, Chalerm is as Defense Minister , on record stating that there are no terrorist in Thailand. There again he is "on record" for a lot of things.

Starting again just like it was in the 80's. Intimidation by unknown's worked than and it kept people from investigating and solving the problem. Basically no one really cared!

There are a lot of trope's in the Thai Army, send them to guard the schools, but let it be known that they will shoot anyone who does not belong near the schools, has a weapon or acts strangely.

In my opinion it has nothing to do with Islam, never did, but protecting illegal smuggling of cars, oil, people ect.

Fear is a powerful weapon. it is used and has been used for a long time in Thailand's Southern Provinces.

It's about time something is done to protect these Thai Citizens so they can be Happy To.

SOUTH CRISIS
Schools set alight as 'act of revenge'

Arson attacks on six Pattani schools follows arrest of key insurgents

PATTANI: -- THE BURNING of six schools in Pattani in the early hours of yesterday was described by the military as an act of revenge for recent arrests of key figures in the southern insurgency.

Army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvari said that it was likely the separatist movement in the southern border region wanted to attack the authorities in response to their arrests of some key leaders recently. He did not identify them.

Searches, sieges and seizures

"Authorities recently arrested some important leaders of the insurgent movement in our proactive operations.

"There were searches and sieges at some sites, and seizures of many items used in insurgent attacks," he said.

Colonel Banpot Poonpian, spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command, said units working in the area agreed that the authorities' recent operations that led to arrests of many suspects in key insurgent cases could have caused the militants to torch schools in retaliation.

Security would be boosted for schools in the deep South, while local residents would be asked to help guard against similar attacks in the future.

No injuries were reported in the incidents that took place from 2am to 2.30am in Thung Yang Daeng and Ma-yor districts.

More than 40 assailants suspected to be insurgents set fire to eight school buildings, some of which were badly damaged, police and witnesses said.

Village defence volunteers and residents managed to extinguish the blazes at some schools and save their buildings from being burned to the ground.

No group has claimed responsibility.

Army chief General Udomdej Sitabutr, who is also deputy defence minister, has instructed the Fourth Army Area to survey the damage caused to the schools targeted in the apparently concerted arson attacks so that those affected would get nec?essary assistance, Banpot said.

The general also urged authorities to find out who the perpetrators were.

The Army chief is scheduled today to chair a teleconference with Army units in the deep South and the latest arson attacks are expected to be raised at the meeting, Banpot |said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha instructed the Army to come up with clear measures to prevent more arson attacks on schools in the southernmost provinces, as the new semester is about to begin, said Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, a deputy government spokesman.

Prayut also called for quick repair of the damaged school buildings, he said.
