Metropolitan police chief suspends project to catch traffic bribers

Featured Replies

Another example of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

New campaign to tackle corruption launched one minute, only to be pulled the next.

This mob don't know their ar$e from their elbow.

How wrong you are.

It was not traffic cops who got the money it was two officers of rank. sad.png

It was a set up all the way to reward them for some reason.bah.gif

I dont know why people dont just film them taking bribes... would be real easy to just film the BIB on one of their routine stop and bribe checkpoints they put up at random...

Camera zooms are great these days and with a bit of ingenuity even a voice recording wouldnt be hard to get.

Slap them up on you tube and facebook.......... bet if it caught on there would be hundreds going up in the first few weeks

Thais do it already....Check Thai forums and facebook-sites. Every day Thai people distribute clips of bribery....and much more crazy stuff....

Does anyone know the actual stsuts of this campaign as there are been a couple of very contradictory statements from the BIB.

First the scheme was introduced and two rewards paid out THEN it was reported it had been ordered scrapped THEN there was a comment from Adul to say the scheme would remain until the end of the month when it would be evaluated. he also supposedly said police were not to use cameras or ' stealth devices ' to record evidence as it might make the public think the police are their enemies !

A Pol Col from the Highway Police reportedly said the police didn't need to use cameras as anyone offering a bribe would be arrested anyway.

Seems he overlooked the fact that Sgt Narn, the first recipient of a reward, said he had been offered bribes many times and had warned motorists to stop or he would arrest them. Despite offering / attempting to bribe being an offence it doesn't seem Narn bothered to do his job until the reward scheme was introduced.

Let me see if I understand this. The deputy police chief initiates a program that the top police chief knew nothing about! Yeah right! Sounds like someone taking a bullet for the stupidity of the boss. Either way, the boss looks like a clown.

Where exactly does it say he knew nothing about the scheme?

POLICE
Reward for traffic cops suspended

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- JUST a week since its implementation, the Metropolitan Police's controversial campaign of rewarding traffic police Bt10,000 for arresting bribe-offering law-breakers appears doomed.

The Traffic Police's caretaker commander, Colonel Apisit Muangkasem, issued a statement yesterday saying that the concerned police agencies had agreed the campaign should be suspended.

He said traffic police would now focus on strictly enforcing the law. He warned law-breakers against attempting to bribe officers.

The caretaker Metropolitan Police commissioner, Maj-General Sriwara Rangsiphramkul, said the suspension of the scheme was due to a budget shortage, adding that only Bt100,000 was allocated for it.

Sriwara said he would discuss the matter with his deputy, Maj-General Adul Narongsak, to determine whether the campaign should be terminated after it attracted much criticism.

He said his working group assessing the public response to the scheme on social media suggested ending the campaign, due to widespread opposition.

Critics have said the police should focus on bribe-taking officers, and not just the bribe-offering lawbreakers.

The Metropolitan Police chief said he would find out whether the campaign was part of a policy that existed before he assumed office.

Two Metropolitan Police Bureau traffic officers last Wednesday became the first to receive the reward. He also said he would ask the Royal Thai Police if it thought the campaign should be terminated. The campaign, which started last Monday, aimed to promote and encourage honesty and dignity among traffic officers, who have earned a bad reputation for accepting bribes.

Thats a crock of <deleted> for sure. Ive been ordered to pay highway patrol bribes several times in the past 2 years since i started driving the tollways

Sriwara said the campaign violated the people's rights and he would demand deputy Metropolitan police chief Poj Maj Gen Adul Narongsak, who initiated the campaign, to explain his reason behind the campaign.

I feel sorry for Maj Gen Adul, imagine the loss of face, must be heartbreaking for him. lol

Nobody said that the police chief didn't know about the program.

How about going after the bribe takers (demanders)?!

Let them lose their job? Oh no, no matter what?

Do you recall the case when national security had been undermined by high ranking Immigration policemen who were running some Visa scam?

No loss of their pensions etc., oh no.

For credibility, Thailand needs to change a lot more to put an end to all this.

All it did was encourage police to twist your arm to agree to pay him on the spot. Happened to me. My Thai wife passenger in Thai refused to pay. Then he pressed after being denied the 400 THB payout - "It can cost you 1,000 - 2,000 if you go to the station to pay." He showed us on his smart (?) phone. Then he demanded 1,000. Wife's answer - No! Finally he issued the citation and walked away with my license. What was all this for? I stopped for a few seconds in a pedestrian cross-walk, backed out because the car behind me gave me room. The cop said I should have run the red light to avoid being stuck in the cross-walk. They really are nuts.

If as some have suggested they dealt with the bribe takers as opposed to the bribe givers, then at least 25% fo the police would lose their jobs. NO that's wrong, we would have more police in inactive posts than active posts, Question therefore , 'Would we notice the difference between inactive to active ? As one is as inefficient as the other.

Perhaps a policy of offering the public 10,000 baht for catching police officers extorting bribes would be better received!

I think we just give the BIB wrist bands with money detectors.

Has he just learned about the scheme? Where has he been?

Great comedy.Whats next?

he didn't get all those medals, badges and braid on his uniform just by sitting around waiting for photo opportunities.......

At what point do they get embarrassed with their own behavior?

Laughable, to start a campaign with a budget of 100,000.
The budget was shattered certainly already after just 1 hour.

How do you prevent a corrupt cop from taking bribes? By bribing him to not take bribes, OF Course!! clap2.gifbiggrin.png .

And now they probably complained to the top honcho that nobody is paying them bribes anymore, so they can't make a living anymore. And then they started to frame people by dropping a 100 Bill or so in front of them and taking a picture.

No need to waste money going to Disney-world. Micky Mouse rules OK here.

Please ensure brain is in gear before engaging mouth!

Most programs that have wide public exposure and could be controversial are generally tabled by senior leaders, intermediate and in some cases, those that it will affect are asked for input.

After that is accomplished, it is sent for legal revue and then forwarded to the person-in-charge for approval.

The system used here seems dysfunctional.

The telephone hotline for the stressed out BIB was unable to cope with all the calls

He realised that they were not taking in any extra money, instead they were having to pay out to much. The bribe pot was now emptied. Hahaha

I suspect they received a call from Prayut telling them to stop that program which is nonsense.

What hope is there! Frightening to think these people carry guns.

They carry guns...I wouldn't trust them with GUM.

They couldn't chew and think at the same time. Or do they ever think?

This well thought out idea would have cost more than the rice scam scheme.

But can you imagine..if the expats "Turned the Tide" and we used cameras to catch the bad cops? They woukd all be fired in a month & broke!!

Back to the drawing board! A well-trained, well-paid police force should not have to be bribed--with essentially a 10,000 Baht bribe--to REPORT a bribe!

Only thing that could be funnier would be clowns on ice.

Or a bus load of retards on their way to Chuck E. Cheese.
