I'm curious, if anyone has ever tried to get rid of their voice plan and just use VOIP on a tablet, maybe with bluetooth ?

i'm guessing in LOS, one hang up, is getting a BKK based VOIP number ?

but is there any reason this would not work on almost all tablets? then I don't need to buy a tablet and a phone ........

What, exactly, are you hoping to accomplish?

Please provide as much detail as possible.

Are you looking to minimize in-bound and/or outbound calling within Thailand?

What kinds of data networks do you have access to?

Net/net, given the extremely low-cost of traditional GSM voice, nearly 100% availability, the fact that only the calling party pays, demand for intra-Thailand VoIP is minuscule. Straight=up voice calling is complemented with messaging (Line/WhatsApp!). About the only VoIP arbitrage play is int'l LD.

Get a phone that meets your requirements, get a tablet that meets your requirements. In most cases a decent phone, and WiFi-only tablet will suffice.

But not sure what your requirements are, as you've chosen to share no details.

I do this with my Note 8, though I also have my SIM card in it so that I can receive SMS messages from my bank and incoming calls on my mobile number. I just never use the SIM phone part for dialling out and always use UK SIP instead (I only ever call abroad, and rarely do that). Receiving calls on my Thai number isn't a problem as it's free (for me).

Lomatopo, instead of another Obi, I bought the magicjack.

My question, is if I forward my googlevoice number -> magicjack number, will the magicjack app ring, on a Thai IP address (data and/or wifi connected) , I believe you said , yes it would ?

Perhaps, depending on how well 4G works in BKK, one could just get a unlimited data 4G plan and tether it to their laptop, and not need DSL/Cable , if so can you recommend a monthly / pay-as-you-go data plan unlimited or otherwise, 1000 apologies, if this has been asked ad nauseum......

I still don't have a feel for what it is you are trying to accomplish.

Do you want people to be able to reach you 24/7 by dialing a ten digit U.S. number? Is leaving a voice-message not an option?

You do understand there is a time difference between the U.S. and Thailand, with little overlap in day-time hours. Do you want to be woken up with incoming calls?

Maybe best to step back from the technology and just clearly state exactly what it is you want to achieve.

How many calling minutes per month do you envision? In-bound? Outbound?

Do you need to present a specific caller ID to called parties?

Yes, you can forward in-coming calls to your GV number so that they ring through on your mJ number/device.

You will not be able to get an unlimited 3G/4G mobile data plan, which will support VoIP once you reach your data cap. Will you have other data requirements? What is your budget for networking?

Again, you seem intent on making this as complicated as is possible, when there may be quite simple solutions available.

It might be simplest to to monitor calls/messages to your GV and mJ numbers, and then return calls using a calling card.

incoming calls to my GV number ring through to my phone here in Thailand (using either mobile data or WiFi) using Hangouts; there is an Android app. for mJ which allows similar functionality.
