PM wants quality tourists to visit Thailand



BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has wanted the Sports and Tourism Ministry to screen incoming tourists to make sure they are of quality.

However, he said that this did not mean that backpackers would not be welcome in this country but the Sports and Tourism Ministry must be more selective in allowing tourists to come to Thailand.

The prime minister also mentioned the incident when the Thai ambassador to Britain was invited for a meeting with the British deputy foreign secretary for an explanation about the arrest of two Myanmar migrant workers under suspicion of involvement in the murder of two British backpackers on Koh Tao in mid-September.

He said that the British minister was satisfied with the explanation from the Thai ambassador. He however added that if Britain wanted to join in the investigation of the murder case he would not have any objection unless it amounted to an interference in Thai affairs.

Tourists wants more quality Thais.

Everyone wants quality....on both sides.

Quality security and fair play will bring the quality tourist.

The first step must be taken.

Backpackers will still be welcome. But the bikini wearing ones will not be welcome?

Quality tourists will be lining up to come here. I can just see them wanting quality murders, quality scams, quality multi-tiered pricing, and quality police shake-downs. If Thailand wants quality, they first have to provide quality.

Ridiculous. Quality tourists do not stay away due to any security issue.

They stay away because there are better destinations for quality tourists to visit. Countries that are less commercially developed, have cleaner beaches, have cleaner city sidewalks, have less touts, offer safe activities for their children, offer more activities like golfing and sport-fishing, etc..

And less of a reputation as ground zero for sexual exploitation.

Thailand's tourism future is going to be Chinese (who are not bothered by heavy pollution) and Russian (who are bothered by neither pollution or corruption) and 20-something backpackers ( who are too drugged up to be bothered about much anything--even the need to use soap).

Does this mean the Sports and Tourism Ministry will have staff at Swampy etc saying " Yes ', ' No ' and based on what, appearance, no confirmed hotel booking, too ugly / attractive ?

The general is proving to be a proper Thai official as he's opening his mouth without considering his words.

What planet is this man on.... Quality tourist ?????? Please explain... Oh that's right like your quality police force. Most of the tourist destinations in Thailand are only good because of the foreign owned or started businesses there. Ask yourself where you stayed, where you ate, what club you went into... I would wager probably foreign owned... Its time to pull out people. Put your business dollars elsewhere. Put your money into a country that deserves it. Cambodia for instance. You would almost be getting in at the ground floor. Perhaps its time to make Cambodia a better version of what Thailand use to be..morally its impossible to stomach this PM anymore.

Let's start screening them at airport. Have a new question added to the Arrival card: "Are you a Quality Tourist" Yes or No?

Quality costs money. Provide quality and quality will follow. Until then you're stuck with Cheap Charlies and Balloon Chasers.

there is nothing so special in thailand to attract those quality tourists as Bali or Siem Reap or many more do.

even the so beautiful islands ..did you take a walk inside koh Lipe or koh Phayam?there are mountains of rubbish why the quality tourist should go there instead of maldives seychelles or polynesia?

maybe the north west Mae Hong Son..Nan...Tak...and so on but just a small part of thailand

Seriously though what is a quality tourist? One who spends lots of money to the local economy or one who sits on a tour, visits temples and spends little. I think the Tourism minister should be more specific so we can take his comments more seriously.

While I can understand them not wanting wife-beater wearing lager louts, you reap what you sow I'm afraid, PM. That type is coming here because your society attracts it. IE clean up your backyard and they'll go elsewhere. But as for your comment in general, well, it is typical and expected. Unremarkable, unsurprising and uninspired. We would expect nothing else really.
