Golf Classic set to draw stars as Thailand's richest tournament

BANGKOK: -- The US$2-million Thailand Classic will become the Kingdom's biggest golf event when it tees off at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin from February 12-15 next year.

The inaugural Classic will be the first Asian Tour and European Tour co-sanctioned event to be permanently based in Thailand. It will also mark the return of the European Tour here after eight years and the Blue Canyon in Phuket in 2008.

"Thailand has been one of our strongest markets over the years and the addition of a new event will cement the nation's place as one of Asia's golfing giants. The Thailand Classic will no doubt inspire many more world-class stars to emerge from the Kingdom," said Asian Tour chairman Kyi Hla Han.

With the Classic, Thailand will play host to six international events in 2015, including the LPGA Thailand, OneAsia/Japan Tour co-sanctioned Thailand Open, and three Asian Tour series - the Queen's Cup, King's Cup and Thailand Championship.

European Tour stars currently enjoying success around the world will be an exciting addition to the Thailand Classic field alongside some of Asia's finest, including the best of Thai golf. Prize money earned will count towards the 2015 Race to Dubai, a year-long competition currently led by World No 1 Rory McIlroy.
