plachon...waxing lyrical about a pint of Harvey's Best? You from E. Sussex mate? Never seen Harveys outside of a 50 mile radius of Lewes.

Cheers and down the hatch...Harveys is probably the best beer south of the East Midlands (Bass, Ind Coope and Pedigree). Plenty of others north thereof...Tim Taylor's Landlord...absolute king of beers. Let's turn the thread into a brawl regarding favorite UK beers...initiated by a Yank...

Bloody ####, cobber, a Yank who knows his beers! Never thought I'd live to see the day............Your time in Brighton wasn't entirely wasted then? (Bass and Ind Coope are massed produced cack, though. Did you try Ansells in the Midlands?)

Yep, i lived slap-bang inthe middle of Harveys and King and Barnes (Horsham) country, although the latter has recently been closed down and taken over by the Badger Brewery in Dorset I believe, where they now brew "Sussex" ales. Harveys is still a better pint, though you can find a mean bitter or two down at the Ship Inn, Exceat Bridge by the Cuckmere, where they've got as micro-breweery these days. Long Live Real Ale!

plachon...you got to admit that Bass and Ind Coope are cask conditioned ales. At my local in Derby we got the landlord to serve it out of jugs as he was too lazy to flush the pipes from the cellar to the pumps at the bar. Derby is close to the point of production and good ales never travel well. You got to admit that Marston's Pedigree is a superb pint if handled well.

I lived nearby a King and Barnes tied house in Brighton...never liked their products...always ordered a Stella...

No pub I was ever in sold Ansells...maybe I'm thinking about the dutch lager...

I was a CAMRA man until my membership expired some years ago...I lost my anorak, shaggy looks and sandals and was disqualified anyway...

Ansells...hmmm, yas...a very small brewery but been around for a long time? I'm thinking about a pub on the edge of a respectable council estate in Derby in a well preserved 18th century building...it was a tied pub and had a range of excellent ales as well as mild beers. The unique feature was that by the pumps at the bar there were ancient cylindrical sight glasses where you could see the beer before it was discharged into your pint/or half pint glass.

Friendly landlord...everyone was addressed as 'yes, me dook...'. The place closed down...me and my Irish/English wife at the time were not regular customers and went by on a Sunday lunchtime to find the place shuttered. A real shame...when we first went she remarked 'this is what you think about when you think about a traditional English pub...' They used to do cheap lunches for the pensioners from the estate as well.

Shrinking traditional England.

Get a couple down yer neck....
