The SPL 2006-07 season started yesterday. Did anybody notice? As there are a few SPL followers on this forum, I thought it was a good idea to start a thread for this coming season.

For the first time in many years, the title race appears to be a 3 horse race as apposed to a 2 horse race. Celtic will continue to be steady just as last season. Rangers have a new manager and with that many new players. Rangers could be hit or miss this season. Over in Gorgie, the multi-millionaire Lithuanian chairman/manager has backed Hearts with his money but his continual interference in team affairs will probably hinder them more than it will help them.

The relegation battle will involve Falkirk, Dunfermline, St Mirren, the under achieving Dundee Utd and possibly Inverness CT and Motherwell.

So who's going to win it? Who's going down?

A few years ago there was talk of the top teams in the SPL (Celtic and Rangers) joining the EPL. It's all gone quiet now, what was the outcome? Would they have had to start in the lower leagues?

There was a bunch of stuff that nobody could agree on - as there waere too many agendas. They didn't want to start in the lower leagues. Who would be displaced by their arrival? How would the displaced teams be compensated? What would happen in the SPL? Would they get the Champions League positions from the previous season?

Rangers were always talking about this. When they got into financial difficulties a couple of years ago, talk of going to the EPL stopped.

Personally, I think it would have been great! There would be lower revenues for the clubs left - but we would get to see our teams seriously challenging for silverware! And we would get to watch the Old Firm getting humped every week! :o

There was talk of Rangers and Celtic joining the English League a couple of years ago but nothing ever came of it. From what I recall, I think the EPL clubs wanted Celtic and Rangers to start in The Championship.

From The Old Firm's point of view playing in Scotland guarantees them trophies and European football every season. On the negative, they can't really attract top players to Scotland and aren't really fullfilling their potential playing in Scotland. Both of them are massive clubs and if they did ever join the English League, then I think within 5 years they would be up their challenging for the EPL title.
