Anyone grown Bismarckia Palm from Seed?

Featured Replies

First thing I did when I bought my house in Thailand over a decade ago was stick a couple of Bismarckia nobilis Palms in. We have always called them Blue Palms, but anyhoo, one of them developed some shoots with seeds among the lower branches several months back and as they looked a bit messy, I just chopped them off... facepalm.gif

Since then, I have gained access to some spare land and I'd love to have a go at growing them. Fortunately, my second tree has had seeds for a few months now and I've already thrown a few in the ground to see what happens (nothing). Picture the wife in the background with a smirk on her face and shaking her head in disbelief. She's already told me I need to wait until the seeds are red and fall off, but I'd be interested to find out if anyone on the forum has actually grown these palms from seed.

Yes.

Wait until the seed is bright red and ready to fall.

Plant with or without the flesh (try both to see which works best - both work actually) just under the surface of a good soil medium in a pot or plastic bag/pot.

Keep damp but don't over water.

Place in a partially sunny place (needs shade not full sun).

Be patient. Can take months to sprout.

Be very gentle with the transplant from pot to final location and look after it until well established.

Hello All, after hearing red seed, are these what your talking about??

These are self planted, the kernels fell into my bags i grew chilies last

season, they landed on top of the coir in the bag and after the rains,

they started to grow.

When the kernels are young and still green, the MOL likes to eat the

meat inside.

If you look close, you can see some bleached out kernel's inside.

These are getting trashed.

Thanks for the info guys. Here is a picture post-86157-0-79872700-1415582045_thumb.j just to confirm....

I always have the feeling that these palms need a good dusting. Can't say like them much, but congrats to anyone that can make them grow from seed. Our two year old betel nut palms are one metre high and showing signs of wanting to go.

Hello All, my post was on the WRONG palm, I just red red fruit, which the trees here have.

Here's the ones I was talking about, but the just seed them self, as in the last pic, that's

where the seeds fell like the tom or papaya volnters by where dishes are washed.
