BANGKOK: -- After Wednesday's fire at its electronics component plant in Pathum Thani's Muang district, SVI yesterday pledged not to lay off more than 2,000 workers at its three plants in the Bangkadi Industrial Estate.

Jeerawut Kanthamang, director of the provincial labour office, said SVI's workers would continue to receive their pay as usual, while some would be temporarily transferred to the company's factory in Nonthaburi's Chaeng Wattana area.

Manoon Nunet, senior director of SVI's human resources department, said the fire damage had not been estimated yet. The firm will soon talk with employees about rescheduling their work assignments, he said.

Tambon Bangkadi officials sealed off the area for 45 days pending investigation.

Pol Maj-General Montri Yimyaem, chief of Pathum Thani police, said forensic police examined the scene for clues to the cause of the blaze, checked the building's structure and interviewed witnesses.
