TBWG
Someone please explain the significance of a person pointing at the problem posing for a photograph. Who started the 'finger point?' It is possible that police find it useful photo clarification for any subsequent evidence needed but my personal opinion is that I don't think it would occur if reporter's did not specifically ask for that pose. It is hardly a natural thing to do without being asked, I wonder if they' would stop asking for the pose if the victims started to point with their middle-finger... Goes back a long way, afraid Thai's can't claim it as theirs! Edited November 14, 2014 by TBWG
petercool
Ok, it's fascinating but let's not hi-jack this topic with any more finger pointing comments. Thanks, petercool - moderator team edit : One post was just removed for not reading the above !!
phanangpete
I believe the reason you never see a foreigner working as a mechanic here is because the thai immigration forbid it, its one of those listed occupations . I have atleast two friends who are qualified UK mechanics and both have told me this, . It seems insane to me why for something so important like road safety they don't allow it , even to train young thais, but yet again, there is no logical explanation. I had many occassion to question the wiring that has been done on my girlfriends suzuki jeep below the bonnet and in many cases its a guessing game, by the enept thai mechanic, ill not go into detail, cause i could'nt be bothered. MiKT
He is lucky it was only a crane and not a full drum of cement which happens only too frequently due to high speed reckless driving in TLS.
mortiboy
All down to lack of vehicle maintenance i reckon,ie,brake failure, more than likely a maintenance issue, maintenance is an ugly word in Thailand. natway09
Lucky fella. The next problem to worry about is the gas cylinder trucks, 25 year old vehicles, driving like a bat outa hell clank, clank, clank brakes, who needs em!!
atyclb
Not so much brake failure , as a failure to brake. usually "failure to mentate" can explain most failures in society
kannot
Cranes, cement trucks, huge coaches etc, do the drivers of these vehicles undergo specific training and licensing? If the brakes 'failed' or not, criminal action should be taken. Excuse my mirth

Rimmer
Those Toyota windows are strong! That Toyota is a brand new Ford Ecosport, don't wonder the new owner of it looks cross
Traveller45
The car body is incredibly sturdy. FORD is not otherwise my favourite brand, but here I must admit that they have done a fantastic job. The driver, too, looks surprisingly relaxed. I would have expected severe shock at least... Benmart
Just once I'd like to see a witness/cop not pointing at a crime/accident scene Irritations in my life can sometimes be lessened by acceptance and understanding that the small things don't really matter. Another option that I have is hitting the power button or getting news from another source. Edited November 14, 2014 by Benmart

It is hardly a natural thing to do without being asked, It's not something new. If you get the chance to visit SRT's HQ at Hua Lampong, on the main staircase, first landing is a large painting of a crowded railway station, official in pith helmet stood on the tracks pointing at what is evidently some poor sod who's been hit by a train. I thought it more than somewhat bloodthirsty, then, bu99er me, in the conference room there's another similar painting. Next time I'm there I'll take a photo. Jim walker
So why did the driver choose to go out in a vehicle with faulty brakes surly this would have been mentioned on the vehicle maintenance sheet or he would have found out himself during his walk round pre drive vehicle check tyres brake pipes lights indicators and general condition.

Almartin
Someone explain to me what is about brake failure when you got air brake that lock themselves when there is a brake failure? Brake failure is the wrong word. It's brake fade. The pads get too hot and become ineffective, so even if the brake system locked as it does when there is no air in the system they still wouldn't work. It's common problem and probably could have been avoided with proper maintenance.

CapeThai
Hmmm....just another day in paradise. No need to maintain heavy duty machinery such as cranes operating on public roads !! Hey Boss, the warning light for the brakes has been on for some time now. We need to get the crane specialist out here to correct the issue now !! No my son that's tooo expensive, quickly run around the corner and ask the scooter mechanic to quickly take a look....
Popular Post paul955
Having run my own transport company for many years in the UK I have seem many events such as this. 99% of the time its always due to either speed or alcohol. In the UK the first thing the police would do in any vehicle accident like this is breathalyse the driver, yet that never seems to be done here. Crazy as I witness week in and week out drunken phalang and thai racing around Pattaya on their motorbikes and cars. Brake failure can and does happen, especially on older undermaintained vehicles, but that is still very very rare. My personal belief ( if not under the influence of alcohol.............and even possibly drugs ) is quite simply driving too fast. Ive seen it with fully trained drivers, so it can happen anytime and anywhere. This old boy and the other vehicles where very very lucky, as a lot greater damage and even death could quite easily have happened.
