I've UTFSE but cannot find confirmation of the exact times of Muay Thai at Lumpini on a saturday.

Is it at 6.30pm the same as weeknights, or does it move forward?

Regards

Steve

Saturday nights has 2 shows Steve. The first show is moved forward a little and I believe starts around 5 and finishes around 8pm the second show starts around 830-9 and finishes at midnight to acomodate the saturday night ch 5 tv broadcast from 11 till midnight.

Both shows tend to be lower key than than midweek shows with a lower standard, the afternoon start show especially is more of a show to bring young talent through.

However, these prices seems WAY more than what I paid last time I went.. I think it was 200b?!

I am sure that this is 'tourist price' when I go I will read the Thai signs, and see how much it really is. I used to box, so no way I will be sitting ring side!

OK...have checked Thai version of that website, real price is:

อัตราค่าดู 2,000 บาท , 460 บาท ,230 บาท

...ok 230b is enough for me, already 30b price increase from last time (grumble grumble grumble) :-)

Entry prices seem to vary based on the day/date/card. Some upcoming cards are 2,000/480/240, others are 2,000/200.

Is there a similar website for the Muay Thai at Ratchadamnoen Stadium? (Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Sunday)

I don't think they have the 3rd class prices on staurday to be honest, just ringside and 2nd class open.

As of yet there is no website for Ratchadamnern

OK; here is the situation. The fights at Saturday 5pm are a TOTAL waste of time. Fine for a spectator or tourist at a push, but it is utter rubbish. THe fighters are no names, I haven't trained for 8 years now, and I would have probably be able to go 5 rounds with 6 of the 8 pairs of fighters.

It is strictly for tourists, so there are hardly any Thais, no atmosphere, and while Thais are 200b, tourists have to pay 1000b to cover the cost of trilingual commentary, and a show in the middle.

If I hadn't had a foreign friend in tow, I would have not bothered, but the whole point was to show him the art of Muay Thai. As it was, we negotiated the price down, but this time is not really for anyone who actually is serious about muay Thai, I have not had to waste an hour watching such rubbish fights as these ones.

The only redemption was that Somluck was there with friends, so had a decent chat to him, although I think he was more interested in talking to my gfriend than to me :o He pointed out the same thing, and said the 10pm fights are quite a bit better; however midweek is where it is at for decent matches.

Whatever you do, NEVER accept a deal from people outside the ticket windows, as they will rob you blind when it comes to ticket prices. The touts always try to get me at Ratchadamnoen Stadium and I just smile and say no.

steveromagnino...you talked with Somluck? I've seen him at Ratchadamnoen a couple times but I've never spoken with him. How's his English? People have told me he speaks a little bit. He has a really good fighter under his management right now; Saenchai Sor. Khamsing. A real technical boxer which is a rarity these days.

How many bouts have you had? I haven't run into many farangs who have competed in Muay Thai. I've never competed...I simply don't have the time/energy, plus I didnt' start training till I was 26 which is WAY too old to be competitive in Muay Thai.

The ticket offices weren't selling any 3rd class tickets at all. So no way to get in my foreign mate; I was fine to pay the 200b, but my friend was not. They have some idea who i am already, as I have done some work in the entertainment industry and news industry here.

For P'Somluck, I don't know of his english; I spoke to him in Thai. We have a number of mutual friends, but I haven't met him before.

Only fought in exhibitions back in NZ; was a southpaw training partner for some of the main guys in my gym a few of whom have acheived some success in K1 but this was 10 years ago now:

Ray Sefu

Ronny Sefu

Jayson Vamoa (best technicaly, weak chin)

Mike Angrove (who was southpaw cruiser, and was probably the 2nd sharpest of this lot behind Ray)

A Thai semi friend/acquiantance of mine in NZ is a guy called Da, full name Fanta Atapong, and he is the guy who humiliated Don Dragon Wilson in Thailand about 20 years ago. One of Thailand's best welters ever. One of the trainers.

BTW...not farang, 1/2 Thai :-)

18th huh? Might have to go... maybe we can hook up if you want ? PM me; would be fun :-)

Even though getting on a bit, I did go to a Thai gym, for some training once; they said, how come you are so unfit, and are you sure you can be bothered training properly? I said,, probably not, and that's the end of that!

Fanta also fought in Holland a few times back when the sport really started to take off in Europe, a real showman

You are Dutch?!

Ah.... well Dutch are about the best western country and the strongest in the heavier weights it seems; you must get to see a lot of good fighters.

The last time I saw P'Da would be probably 5-6 years ago, and he must be in his 40s now; his pals were a guy from Buriram nickname Rocky who was a former Lumpini champion but I cannot for the life of me remember his full name; and also another guy called Pathai full name uthai Pornakom who would have been one of the biggest Thais around; I think he fought in NZ at about middle weight level 72.5kg.

All had fight records of 300+ fights total. Sad to see though in NZ, as they would fight NZ fighters in THai vs. NZ matches, and would be giving up 10kg minimum; they pretty much didn't train at all, and I suspect most of the fights they were told to carry the oponent at least until the 4th round.

THe guys I missed out on seeing were Diesel Noi and Samart; but not to fear there are good fighters; will go and check out the 18th then :-)

I went to karaoke a couple of times with p'Da, he has a surprisingly good look tung singing voice, I nearly fell off my chair the first time I heard him sing.

Being that 1/2 Thai was quite a novelty a few years back in NZ, none of those guys wanted to train me much, they all claimed I was 'too pretty' to risk damaging my face. Now that I am an old fart, no problem with that anymore 55555555555555.

On the topic of ticket pricing - please help me here.

There are some places in Thailand which will give you the "Thai" price if you can simply speak some intermediate Thai whereas some others will give you the cheap price only if you have Thai ID. What about this place? Will one get the Thai price simply by speaking in Thai?

Can't you just get a Thai person to buy you the tickets at the Thai price?

Just wondering the options if going out without any Thai companions.

you wont be able to get a Thai person to buy you the tickets as they have it printed on ticket for foreigner and I don't think speaking Thai would help here to be honest.

nah im from u.k but ive been a big fan of the sport for many years and also fought a few times myself. Rocky's fight name was Samingnum Sittiboontham and he fought Samart back in the day, Rocky was a great fighter and was Ratchadamnern champion at 2 weights I think and also I believe a bronze medalist in amatuer boxing at one olympics. I know him well he has just recently been teaching in Switzerland and met him at Lumpini the other week

Different Rocky; the one I know (and my family knows) is in New Zealand, and would be a generation before Samart I think.

My impression is if you were a fighter or knew something about Muay Thai and also went regularly, and spoke THai, you'd be able to get in to most fights ok,.

But definitely not Saturday, as that is a show specifically for tourists.

im pretty sure its the same guy as he lived in New Zealand and fought there a lot, thats where he was known as Rocky, he is also from Buriram, ive been to his village several times in the past. I will try and find a picture of him

yep I thought it must have been him when you said he was from Buriram, this guy was in New Zealand around 12 years ago or more and had a lot of fights there. He trained a few decent guys too including Shane Choppa Chapman from City Lee Gar which is I think in Auckland.

You actually were friends with Fanta Attapong? That is awesome! Ypu dont happen to have any fight of his do you on VHS or DVD? Ive seen pictures of him and heard alot about him but never seen him fight :o

Sanchai is fighting Nong O on the 18th August - it looks an amazing match up - its matched at 122lbs which is light for Sanchai - would love to watch it but wont get to BKK until 7th September. Any chance anyone could prehaps record it if you go?

Saenchai is a real technical fighter...definitely a rarity in Muay Thai these days where most fights tend to be dominated by strength/clinching. I've seen him fight live twice and I believe he KO'd his opponent both times.

hold up.... frigging hel_l; it IS the same guy!

Man, he hasn't aged at all!

If he is still around in BKK I might have to try to see if he can remember me; you think he would be there in 18th? What gym does he train for these days, is it in BKK?

If we met face to face I am sure he would remember, but not sure if he ever would recall my name (which is not Steve). It has been 8 years since I saw any of those guys. Only once ever saw Rocky fight, and he just levelled the guy he fought.

As for Choppa....Choppa would have to be one of the best fighters to come out of NZ. I actually also trained at Lee Gar, but not Lee Gar City, Lee Gar Balmoral which was set up as there were just too many fighters at Lee Gar City.

Yep, haven't seen P'Da for years now however; unfortunately none of those guys take much of what they did that seriously...however Lee Gar City did have a video of his fight with Dragon Wilson which I saw once. It was embarrassing how badly Dragon Wilson got beaten; Fanta was even pretending to stagger around and get hurt like Pernell Whitiker style, in the later rounds, to show off and entertain the crowd.

FOr those wanting to relive muay Thai vs. kung <deleted>, you tube has some stuff check out this link!

I was wondering when are the big time kickboxing events in Thailand? Something like the world cup or something...anyone has any ideea?

Posted

I wouldn't say there was any alexth as such. The fights here are mainly for gamblers and on almost every night of the year. You have the Kings birthday and Queens birthday events at Sanam Luang every year where you have a lot of foreigners fighting against Thai fighters and also both stadiums have a big show in december for their respective birthdays

I got my fiancee to ring them and purchase the tickets, we paid 2000 baht each and they even delivered the tickets to our door and we were about 40 mins drive away.

THe THai 3rd class ticket price is around 200b, and few serious boxing fans are found ringside where tickets cost more with a worse viewing angle unless you are right up against the ring. That's why they can afford to deliver the tickets; probably costs a messenger 200b to drop them off :-)
