Highway 4 Nam Heuang to Luang Prabang

Featured Replies

The Thai crossing is Tha Li in Loei, or alternatively the Uttaradit crossing, Phu Du.

From Nam Heuang it is about 370 kms to Luang Prabang on the Highway 4, passing through Pak Lay and Xayabouri. Does anyone know the condition of this highway?

The Phu Du border is not yet open for foreigners, just locals.

Tha Li is a small pleasant crossing, crossed there many times, but not in the last two years. Apparently it's all paved now, and from Xayabouri. to LP is all new road with a new bridge crossing the mekong.

5 years ago it was pretty much all dirt and the bike crossed the mekong in a canoe, Laos is changing fast.

Thanks, it was the 200 to 250 kms from Nam Heuang to Xayabouri that I was most concerned about.

Just checked with my friend who does gps mapping and yes, from the border to LP is now all paved. Enjoy, its a great ride.

Can you buy insurance for your vehicle at the Tha Li crossing?

Just found the old thread - apparently you can.

Actually I couldn't see anywhere at the crossing and found a very nice woman in Kenthao who sorted me out four 200 baht.

PS there are 2 roads up to the crossing on the Thai side. I took the westerly one and it is aged mist but no it quite all of the way.....however looks like they are getting ready to fix that.

How about the 1c?

Thanks.
