BANGKOK, Dec 5 -- Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has tightened measures to control the ivory trade in the country.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan said that the ministry has set a deadline for ivory traders to submit their history of ivory trade report, containing origin and destination countries of the ivory tusks within 60 days starting from January and until the beginning of March 2015.

Gen Dapong received John E Scanlon, Secretary-General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), at the Ministry on Wednesday. They discussed Thailand’s measures to tackle illegal ivory trade issues which has so far proved satisfactory to the CITES.

The Natural Resources and Environment Minister said that the ministry would continue to step up efforts to battle ivory-related crimes and to stop ivory tusk smuggling from South Africa. (MCOT online news)

What a great crowd we have here , Somalian Pirates would be envious of these bandits , on the one hand you've got the Environmental , Wildlife and plant conservation departments all promoting the preservation of Flora fauna and wildlife and in the other hand they are involved in the control of Ivory trade, talk about conflict of interests , you either support the killing of Elephants and the ivory trade or you don't, you can't have a bet each way , now what is it to be. Verdict: Idiots. bah.gif

"...deadline for ivory traders to submit their history of ivory trade report, containing origin and destination countries of the ivory tusks..."

Along with the requisite bribe. Which is probably the reason no progress has been made".

As long as there is money to be made in the trade and there is a demand for ivory, then things will continue as is

Money is way more important than conservation in Thailand and many other countries

Seems to many do not know what they have until it is gone, just look at the tourist and fisheries indistries

but temples full of ivory and ivory sold by monks to locals and tourists is OK...

They discussed "Thai measures."They said they were satisfied, but there is no direct quote from Scanlon quoting exactly what if anything he did say.

Thailand should be leading the way what with their so called reverence for the elephant.

More smoke and mirrors from the cruel men in corrupt offices, shameful given Thailand's affinity with these magnificent creatures.
