BMA's Sunday walking street at Silom officially launched

BANGKOK, 22 Dec 2014, (NNT) -The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has officially launched its pilot project turning Silom Road into a walking street on Sunday, in the hope of spurring the economy and turning the venue into a tourist attraction on weekends.

Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday presided over the opening ceremony of the BMA’s WALKING STREET @ SILOM campaign, under which a section of Silom road from Dusit Thani Hotel to the Silom - Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Intersection would be closed from 3PM to 9PM for vendors to set up stalls.

Every Sunday, the walking street would offer goods, handicrafts, student products, and local goods from the Bangkok’s 50 districts, the organizer said, boasting that more than 1,000 vendors would participate in the weekly event.

The Governor said the campaign would stimulate the economy of the capital, giving low-income earners a space to do business, as well as promoting tourism over the weekend.

According to the BMA, the program will be organized weekly except for the New Year week. And if the project proves successful, more roads will be turned into walking streets.

Dear Quality Tourists and Families:

Don't forget to feed the BGs.

Maybe around the Dusit Zoo would be more appropriate?

Silom walking street opens

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday officially opened Silom as a walking street to boost tourism, and enable evicted street vendors to have new venue for doing business.

It was the BMA’s pilot project to turn the sidewalks of this financial district to a shopping street and to become a new tourist attraction on weekends.

If the project proves successful, the BMA will turn other business district into walking street.

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra presided over the opening ceremony on Sunday.

Under the pilot project, a section of Silom road from Dusit Thani hotel to the Silom – Narathiwat Ratchanakarin intersection will be closed from 3.00 pm to 9.00 pm for vendors to set up stalls.

Sounds great. I look forward to trying it out.

Yes a great idea but the one worrying comment was "And if the project proves successful, more roads will be turned into walking streets.". The first one will almost certainly prove to be successful and they will then open more and more until there are not enough customers to keep them all in business.

Silom Sunday walking street was tried out about 5 years ago, but Trink the Dink kept writing bad reports about it until the scheme was brought to an end.

Personally I think it is a great idea.

Is this where the pee police hang out?

I have a sense of deja vu. Will they resurrect Samak to bin it again?
