They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, Secret Service agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning former Governors...

All I can say, (in light or darkness of recent events) is that the money that was about to be spent on 400 items of hospital machinery for rural hospitals in Guatemalan highlands has now been put forward for screening devices at the one international airport.

Muslims cry foul over 'passenger-profiling' plans

Screening airline passengers of a certain ethnic or religious background to uncover those who pose a potential terrorist threat would risk alienating the Muslim community, prominent Muslims cautioned today.

The Times reported this morning that the Government is discussing with airport operators plans to introduce a screening system that allows security staff to select people who are behaving suspiciously, have an unusual travel pattern or are from certain ethnic or religious backgrounds.

It is understood that officials at the Department for Transport believe that this system would not only be more effective at identifying terrrorists, but would also greatly relieve queues.

However, Ali Dizaei, a chief superintendent in the Metropolitan Police and one of Britain's most senior Muslim officers, said that tougher checks based on ethnicity would create a new offence of "travelling whilst Asian".

"It become hugely problematic when it's based on ethnicity, religion and country of origin. I don't think there's a stereotypical image of a terrorist."

The profiling debate came to the fore as as passengers continued to endure long delays and cancellations across UK airports today despite the relaxation of restrictions on hand luggage imposed after last week's disclosure of an alleged plot to blow up flights en route to the US.

British Airways had to cancel 41 short-haul and four long-haul flights from Heathrow today as well as 11 domestic flights from Gatwick, while the budget airline Ryanair has cancelled eight at Stansted.

It has also emerged that a backlog of thousands of bags has been kept under 24-hour surveillance at Heathrow since Thursday when baggage handling systems were brought to a standstill by the weight of luggage being checked in. On Monday, BA staff told passengers that a mountain of up to 40,000 bags had built up, but a spokeswoman told Times Online today that the backlog had been cut to 5,000.

Despite the easing of restrictions, passengers are still strongly advised to allow extra time for their journey over the next few days with security staff still having to search 50 per cent of travellers.

The Muslim Council of Britain said that if such checks were narrowed to target members of the Muslim community the government could alienate Muslims whose co-operation is vital in combating threats of terror.

"The Government needs to think very, very carefully before it considers putting this measure into practice," Inayat Bunglawala, spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain said.

"We have seen very different arrests since 9/11, and terrorists, or suspected terrorists, come from many different backgrounds.

"Muslims are not an ethnic group and come from many different backgrounds including from the black community and increasingly from the white community."

However, Haras Rafiq, spokesman for the newly-formed Sufi Muslim Council, said he favoured such screening measures as long as they were carried out in a "professional" and courteous manner.

Interesting to note.

As many of you know, I recently returned from working in Afghanistan (just over 2 years living and working in Kabul).

Took many trips from the Kabul airport, into Dubai and Delhi. Only time I was really checked was at the Delhi airport, as I was catching a flight to Thailand.

I even asked one of the Afghani Border Guards about it. Basically, what he said is that they didn't think Westerners would try to hijack or blow up a plane, but an Afghani/Arab might.

Hence pretty much every Westerner I saw go through the airport was waved through, with the barest minimum of searching, if it was done at all, while almost everyone that looked Afghani or Arab was searched.

So even in an Islamic Republic, they do racial profiling on fellow Muslims.

Kinda sort of the same thing when arriving in Kabul as well. Most Westerners, especially those escorted by foreign security personnel, were waived through customs, while Afghanis/Arabs had their bags x-rayed and screened.

This was more of a result of the Afghanis not knowing what to do with the huge quantities of booze being brought into the country be the Westerners. They used to confiscate it, but there was starting to be so much of it (and some was being pilfered by various uniformed personnel), that they finally gave up and just started waving Westerners through.

Had to laugh one day. I was escorting a group returning from holidays. We had to wait in the main lobby for a couple of slow people. One of the guys had a couple bottles of whiskey in his suitcase and one had broken due to the poor baggage handling procedures.

There he was in the lobby, with whiskey dripping out of his suitcase, forming a pool on the floor.

The look on the faces of the Border Guards and Immigration Police as they walked by was priceless. They would notice the pool of fluid and suddenly get a whiff of the smell. Their heads would crank around, see the Westerner sitting there, then they would snap their heads forward and pretend they didn't notice anything !

By the way, I answered "B" to all of Boon Mee's questions !

Racial profiling isn't done in airports, as I see little old ladies getting pulled for secondary searches all the time, but it does need to be done. Boon Mee was right about who exactly is pulling these acts of terror and it's only that particular group so there is no need to look at anyone else with as much scrutiny. I am so sick and tired of all this PC crap going on in the world. Not just in this instance either, I am sick of it in every instance. People are way too sensitive and nowadays nothing can be said about anyone. Unfortuantely certain people do certain things and if they do, people should be able to do something about it or at least say something.
