Former Democrat MP Warong Dechgitvigrom has expressed his dissatisfaction with former premier Yingluck Shinawatra's defence of her government's rice-pledging scheme before the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) yesterday.

Yingluck has been accused of dereliction of duty for allowing corruption and causing billions of baht in losses.

He said the former PM failed to explain herself on the allegation and deviated from the main reasons for the impeachment hearing.

Warong, a key figure grilling Yingluck in a censure debate over the rice-pledging, said Yingluck was trying to draw attention to an old story about assisting farmers to have better living conditions. "No one denies that farmers need immediate assistance. The problem is the mismanagement of the rice-pledging scheme, which caused severe losses to the farmers," Warong said.

He rebutted the former PM's statement that the impeachment could be considered a great challenge to the country's reconciliation and reform process.

Warong said the reform process and the impeachment proceedings should not be confused. "By citing the reconciliation and reform process in her conclusions, the former PM seems to ignore her own responsibility", Warong said.

"If the members of the NLA would like to perform their role in putting the country back on the right track, the impeachment of a wrongdoer would show the supremacy of the law", Warong stated.

However, the former premier's legal team was satisfied with Yingluck's clarification to the NLA. Pichit Chuenban, chief adviser to the Pheu thai legal team, said that Yinluck had addressed all the key points. He said her legal team was more concerned about pressure on the NLA to impeach the former premier. He did not say whether the former premier would attend the NLA hearing next Friday.

What she says in front of this kangaroo assembly is as irrelevant as what she presented to the kangaroo court / independent agency earlier last year. The result is a fait accompli decided by old men in uniforms behind closed doors long before the NLA plays out its charade. So any talk of due process, evidence being considered and decisions being made based on reason is only for the naive and not worthy of debate by anyone with even a little intelligence.

When a boss you can delegate your authority but not your responsibility !

And this press release was done by the opposing political party. Why ascribe to either of them as "truth"?

Since she is guilty, there is no real way she could have 'addressed the issue' without incriminating herself. Now, if the prosecution continues, her supporters will see this as a political 'witch hunt'. She has successfully sown the seed of more division within the country. It is clear to me that she is still taking advise from her 'caddy'. Shinawatra DNA to the bone.

There is no defense for the dereliction of duty charge. She was the boss, PM, and head of the rice scheme. Someone has to be held responsible for the waste, graft and damage. The only defense she presented was; Look at me, I'm such a nice person, look at how softly I speak, and a veiled threat, basically saying that the reds will hit the streets if she is impeached. That speaks volumes to me, this woman who holds no office, will be impeached, from what? Her vanity knows no bounds, and she doesn't care how many of her followers (paid by her brother), have to suffer if she turns them loose. The woman is either as big an egomaniac as her brother or she is stupid. Given her job performance, perhaps it's both.

Lets all be honest here. No one knows what's going to happen here. This all depends on the reconciliation agreement agreed by the government and the Redshirts.

That being said

Yingluck 'friend of the farmer' left it to the military to pay the farmers long overdue income from the scheme. Refusing to answer charges is typical of politicians around the world. However claiming that now you no longer in office therefore can't be charged is ridiculous. It really is a shame she wont be going to prison, she deserves it.

All this appears to be a delusional effort on the part of the junta. The military deposes an elected government and usurps authotity, calls for the impeachment of somebody who is no longer in office, and then talks about supremacy of law

Laws are befuddled due to the coup. Also isn't impeachment, which is the wrong word for these proceedings anyway, a judicial process rather than an outcome? Clinton was impeached, but not removed from office.

Supremacy of law comes from NOT taking the easy way out of things. Somthing the junta is already guilty of.

Public office is, and should be, such that you cannot get 'sued', 'impeached' or 'witch-hunted' AFTER you leave office. When you are IN office you should come under CLOSE scrutiny of the public, press and watchdogs and ejected IF the voters votes you out OR you have committed an illegal act.

To hound someone AFTER they leave office is vindictive and absurd UNLESS it was an illegal act. No one has suggested the ex-PM acted illegally they just want to grind her into the ground for revenge and to set themselves up at the feeding trough for years to come.

Most Thais I know find this distasteful and are not in the least fooled by this as they all know the real reason (which we cannot discuss).

There is not a senior military family, senior police family or top political family that does not have a net worth of over 10 million dollars and many are worth considerably more, exponentially more.

What is going on here is application of pressure in the 90-year-old battle for power and national resources between elected representatives (mainly with their constituencies in the North and North-Eastern regions and rural or industrial masses) and non-elected senior figures (mainly with their constituencies in the military, civil service, judiciary and royal court).

The impeachment proceedings and any subsequent impeachment will just be another negotiating lever for the non-elected senior figures to hammer out a better deal for their lot at the expense of the other lot. Neither side would like to devolve any power or resources to the people through better justice for the masses, better health care for the poor or better education for the non-wealthy.

Finally, could you imagine any senior military figure over the last five decades having to publicly account for their actions under threat of punishment from the government? No, it is not possible. They are accountable only to themselves.

Why doesn't she just come out with it and say she's a ' somebody ' and that's an end to it ?

The issue is a 700,000,000,000 Baht debt as result of what the Yingluck Government positioned and defended as 'self-financing' scheme.

On the TV broadcast, they used the word 'suspect'. They don't even have evidences that she's corrupted. There is nothing for her to address. At that point in time, her administration believed it was the right decision to buy the rice from the farmers. End of story.

Most Thais I know wonder why Ms. Yingluck failed to address the issue of a 'self-financing' scheme losing 700 billion Baht. They find it definitely distasteful and are not in the least fooled by a smooth talking woman.

The real reason which we can discuss is Ms. Yingluck and her government failing to address the growing problems with their 'self-financing' scheme, kept on defending it. They even included themselves in the blanket amnesty bill (covering till 2012-08-09). That's not the type of remedy one would like to see.

Perhaps a nice long stay in prison might bring back her failing memory. Make the cell big enough for her brother and other family members.

as this particular NLA has been hand-picked by the 'NCPO' which overturned the last government through, let's say, errr, ... less than legal methods, then it begs the question, "who's law?"

Why do TV members get so aggressive with each other over their differing opinions ? Opinions is all they are, with no direct effect on the results of anything.

It's all a game, being played out as it has been for decades. Thailand will never benefit from any of it, the little people will definitely not benefit, the only people that will are those playing the game.
