Can I break into that field without being an engineer?

Doubt it. If it were that easy, most all of the pikeys on this thread would be queuing up to get a piece of that pie no matter what they bitterly guess about the future of the industry

They (the oil lads, not the pikeys) have their own sub forum here. You could try asking there.

Its a very decent field, If I went back 4-5 years in time, I probably would of studied Petroleum Engineering. I made some enquries before, realized that its impossible for me to break into a good position in exploration with my current qualifications.

Luke with your diplomatic connections why don't you apply to be the Turkish Trade Representative for SE Asia?

There's more money there than you could shake a stick at. Brown envelopes flying everywhere.

An airline pilot is a glorified bus driver and I can't imagine you up to your neck in grease on an oil rig.

Again thanks to all ya guy for the replies. But I'll say it again, I dont get why the discussion is centered around Thailand. Thailand is one of my options only, I wouldn't mind Malaysia,Indonesia,Vietnam either. Last 2-3 pages the qualtiy of posts has gone considerably up, would like to thank you all for the valuable ideas.

I've decided that my plan B is the best in the event that I dont get into the foreign ministry. My cousin who graduated from the same school with the same major now flies with Turkish Airlines, mind you Turkish airlines is a pretty decent airline which pays 7-8k usd a month to a junior first officer.I'd like to thank Dafy for encouraging me, instead of going the Turkish Airlines route, I'll fly for no name carriers in Asia for peanuts while accumulating flight hours and after that I'll try to break into AirAsia,MAS,Cathay Pacific,Singapore Airlines.

There are some very materialistic posts here revolving around houses and cars. In the event that my parents die before me I'll inherit more than 20 residential and commercial properties around Ankara,Istanbul and Bursa + bunch of land + some stocks in Borsa Istanbul. So wealth accumulation is not my primary goal right now, presevation is. Of course I dont want to be some loser who relies on inheritance so thats why I'm trying to find a suitable gig for me.

I've calculated that 6-7k usd a month in todays money is enough for me to lead a decent lifestyle in South East Asia(Singapore is the exception here). My long term goal is to make this amount. And really, I dont need more money than this. In the event that I make more than this, I'll donate most of the excess amount to charitable causes given that the cost of living remains more or less the same. South East Asia passion is not a one time thing for me, 4 years of my childhood I spent in manila, and the other 4 in KL. Been to Thailad bunch of times on vacation alone and with my parents.

The west is losing its exclusivity day by day. I visited Birmingham last year, I thought I took the wrong flight to Pakistan. Even Turkey is getting run down by immigrants now, from Syria and a bunch of arabic countries. Add to that amount of political correctness going on in the west disgusts me, cant stand feminists and communists either.

Better for you to just stay living with your mum and dad and become their rent collecter + with the 2500 $ allowance

Life is a bowl of wine gums for you rich boys

Well off probaby, but rich? hell no. Rich is driving an exotic car, flying business class without worrying about going over budget, dining at 5 star hotels frequently. It might sound good but taking money from your parents when you're over a certain age is very degrading. TUrkish culture is similar to that of thai, parents help their kids out well into 30's 40's, its a nice thing, but relying on them completely is definitely not nice, a bit of help is ok.

I have some really rich friends at my school who roll into campus with Lambos,Ferraris,Porsches, definitely dont feel like one of them. I drive to campus with a Toyota Camry

What a Lame, if slightly vile, phrase 'wage slave' is. It is noticeably always used by the unemployed/unemployable to indicate that they enjoy a sense of 'freedom' laugh.png while chained to their grindhouses, fantasy lives and laughable poverty.

I'd wager any of these pikeys would love to jump into the life 'slavery' has earned me (and that of others), especially in 5 more years when at the dreadful old age of 50 I'll be able to retire, as you lot will have to carry on scamming/blogging/porning. Keep your deluded sense of 'freedom'.

Last night I had a right good old drink, watched Spurs hammer B*****y, went to bed, woke up at 12 in order to do a bit of work to find my assistant had done it, bless her, am soon heading off out again. Some 'slavery'...thumbsup.gif

Funny, I'm well on course for retiring (if I want) 5 - 10 years before you in terms of age. Left school at 15, home at 16, and the UK at 24 aside from a couple of years back there in my early 30s (out of choice not financial pressure) - from a working class background and not a penny from mum, dad or anybody else.

I'd fit your dismissive 'pikey' terminology, though I prefer Software Engineer since that's my profession, and I wouldn't leave my life for yours - perfectly happy in it and doing very well by most standards.

Well your streets ahead of the average pikey then, they have second had Honda waves, with hello kitty decals, ride a push bike ride shanks pony a lot or moto-cy taxis

I agree. You are just too young to set up to live in Thailand yet if in the future you will need a career to support yourself.

On the other hand if your parents will & can support you for the rest of your life get your arse over here now, & enjoy

what engineering school did u attend?

Posted (edited)

I'm self taught, and have no formal education beyond high school (which did not include much 'computing' as it was then known). That's not a regret and has never caused me an issue, even with Nasdaq 100s.

Good thing about Software Engineering, especially when it's publically accessable and web focused, is that proof of ability is easily shown without bits of paper.

Why would anyone lie about that?

youd have to ask them

You're the one who thinks people would lie about this. But yet you can't explain why anyone would do such a thing?

Nevermind SB, there's one in every forum!!

Quite a few shoulder chips on display here. The OP has been open about coming from a relatively comfortable background, but why castigate him for that when he's repeatedly stated that he'd rather make his own way in life than rely on the largesse of his family?

Coming from a relatively comfortable background

Being given 2500$ for jackshit and going to get the rental income off 20 properties

Yep just mildly comfortable lol

I dont get why people dont believe he made 3k $ usd from forex trading? LOl its easily doable, but can you do it consistently? That is the real question. Most brokers offer 1 to 30-40 leverage anyway so someone with a balance of 10-20k can open a position worth 500k.

So the message from some of you seems to be 'forget about being happy, just make as much money as you can'.

Not everyone subscribes to that philosophy.

The O&G workers have to spend 50% of their time at sea with nothing but a censored copy of Thai playboy and the communal copy of readers wives to keep them company, add that to the fear of dropping the soap in the showers and you can understand that they will get grumpy. Please have some sympathy for them.

Sure but they make more money in a day than the Pikeys make in a month and then get a month's paid leave.

They're also terrible fathers who only get to see their kids 50% of the year.

The young pikeys would be making crap money in their own countries too, but they'll be making more than O&G workers in the years to come when their companies grow (and they won't be part-time dads.

I knew a lot of people who only stayed in the game a few years because they cared about their families too much.

I guess it just depends on your priorities.

I'm sorry but how did you become an engineer without attending university. I know how to code in c++ and php as well, can I call myself a software engineer?

finding a high paying gig in sea seems a long shot unless uou have something already going from home.

there are loads of broke losers trying to figure out how to stay a couple weeks longer. its all i hear being talked about at any cafe or bar in town, everywhere young travelers are actually.

watch the movie 'midnight express'

its about a young punk who tried to skirt the law while high on his new freedom. eventually he got punked by a prison guard, went through some life altering adventures and learned that there's "no free ride".

that said, in all liklihood you will last longer broke here on teaching gigs then you would playing the trust fund baby with mom's cash and spouting off about it to every patron and person you meet. learn to shut your mouth, be a man and travel and don't whine. please dont whine.

That movie is about Turkey, and is purely BS. Turkey has some of the most lax laws in the world about drug trafficking. It was a movie sponsored by the Armenian lobby to defame the reputition of my country.

Half the people in the world employed as 'engineers' haven't been to university. Most of the big name old motor racing engineers never did either.

You could start off teaching English in Ho Chi Minh City and move from there. Agree with the idea of not taking money from Mommy and Daddy, though I see many in your age group who do.

Does one really need to speak English to teach it to Thais?

So many English teachers yet Thais speak NO GOOD English..............hahahaha!

Agree. The OP may be atypical in that he seems to come from a well-off family and shouldn't have money issues. But it doesn't change the fact that he will have a difficult time finding a professional, well-paying position in Thailand. Teaching English would probably be the easiest job to find, which is why such jobs are low-paying and garner such little respect in the farang community. The under-the-radar IT stuff are largely hit-and-miss and not entirely reliable or sustainable. I don't want to go through the whole list, but networking is key, backed-up by experience and genuine skills in that field.

besides not seeing the kids is not quite true as there is face time or Skype video

Multiple perm and consulting contracts from Microsoft (https://cldup.com/RJ0LurHCge.png) among other leading US and UK companies would say you're talking out of the same place as you usually do on this forum.

A degree is not a requirement for Software Engineering. Neither Bill Gates nor Mark Zuckerberg have one.

Most don't only work in Thailand but work around the World but anything from $500 per day up to several thousand a day. Senior positions pay extremely well and it's usually all tax free.

OK, that didn't really tell me what I wanted to know as I know you guys work unusual shift patterns, 2 on, 3 off or whatever. What would be a 'normal' yearly salary?

TUrkish culture is similar to that of thai, parents help their kids out well into 30's 40's, its a nice thing, but relying on them completely is definitely not nice, a bit of help is ok.

I know a few Thai's in their 30s and it's THEM helping the parents massively (in fact some of the parents seem to REALLY take the piss IMO and call to almost demand things they want or ask outright for cash for big purchases / holidays) not the other way round.

As far as I knew that was normal and common for the kids to be helping the parents by this age and not the other way round.

In the West I think it's pretty common for parents to be still helping kids with money, mortgage, etc into the 30s. I know a bloke in his late 40s who still lives with his mum and dad and has never left the family home.
