webfact
Impeachment grabs global attentionThe NationBANGKOK: -- Thai National Legislative Assembly's vote to impeach former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra grabbed headlines in global media Friday. Here is what they said about the impacts of this decision on the Thai politics. The New York Times: Dormant political tensions re-emerged in Thailand on Friday when the military junta's handpicked assembly impeached the country's former prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra.Wall Street Journal: Her ban from seeking election sidelines her from a political role, not to mention the prospect of prison, and could infuriate her supporters who have largely kept a low profile since martial law was imposed, analysts and risk consultants say, hardening the fault lines between Thailand's former civilian populist leaders and its ruling conservative armed forces.Time: Following Friday's vote, analysts say the political persecution of Yingluck and her supporters will likely calcify the ever widening divide in the country between the rural and working-class masses, who largely back the populist Shinawatra political machine, and the royalist establishment based in Bangkok. The Straits Times: Former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra was banned from politics for five years on Friday as the military government announced plans to press criminal charges against her, further dimming chances of reconciliation in the politically riven country.CNN: Though the vote was largely symbolic, as she had already lost her post, it also carries a five-year ban from politics.BBC: The BBC’s Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the impeachment sends a strong signal that there will be no compromise and her family will be removed from politics. Popular Post Snig27
One notch closer to Zimbabwe. Could these generals have made a bigger balls-up of Thailand's future? It seems unlikely.
Popular Post bangrak
One notch closer to Zimbabwe. Could these generals have made a bigger balls-up of Thailand's future? It seems unlikely. Who has links with Zimbabwe and its dictator again? Ah, now I remember, the Shins! They even have some businesses in that democratical paradise! And then there is that pumpous twit of a former TAT chief, who is 'friendly' with the Mugabes. As such, I'd say today we are one more step away from all those evil people, not any closer... Popular Post Ricardo
Not to worry, there are plenty more family-members, who can be 'elected' PM at the Great Thinker's behest ! Meanwhile, whose decision was it, to attempt to ram through the Amnesty Bill, at 4am in the morning ? Not the junta's decision, they all came much later, if the overseas media would care to cast their minds back that far.
Popular Post Jingthing
The mere novelty of "impeaching" a leader who was already long ago pushed out of office is sure to catch attention. worgeordie
I don't think the overseas media really understands what happened in the lead up to this, the corruption, nepotism, etc etc, nearly bringing Thailand to its knees, sound bites and one liners thats all they are interested in. just lets hope there is not another Shinawatara in the sidelines waiting to be pushed on by the great leader to be PM. regards Worgeordie

On the other hand what happens in Thailand doesn't have a great consequence to the world. Even a meltdown here wouldn't be the same thing as a meltdown in a more major international player, like Russia.

Squeegee
Probably a nice boost for the Shins: after waiting for the Junta to get around to the pretense of democracy again, it'll be time for the red supporters to vote Yingluck back in on a wave of <deleted> you, or no doubt something along those lines (unless, of course, Elvis quits his gig in the meantime, when all bets will be off).

It seems unlikely. Snig, I don't know where you live but if you ask the good ole folks of Bangkok, they will tell you down to the last man woman and Soi dog that they are more happy and secure with this present government than they have been for many years with all recent governments.. They can sleep at night without being afraid of their city being burned to the ground or being taken over by Red terrorists.. And their tax money is not being wasted in buying rice at double the global price ... And as for the generals making a balls-up... They came in to protect the country from civil war caused by the last government... Grow -up man....

Popular Post DavidBonnie
A great shame . . . . the current leadership is the most corrupt, nepotistic, selfish and self-promoting whilst simultaneously being the most obviously inept. Good luck Thailand, you'll still keep smiling through all the corruption, murders of foreigners and blaming the Burmese . .

Thank you highlighting why illogical comparisons are all that remain as remnants for excuses by PTP supporters. Even if the statements don't make sense anymore they are offered to the forum without any description of why the comparison is offered. You realize Mugabe had been in power and has been "voted in" through elections for 33 years. I think Thailand is one notch closer to Santa Claus! Could yingluck have made a bigger balls upon Thailand's future? This statement makes as much sense as your comment without any explanation. Care to extrapolate?

The deaths started when the reds decided to start shooting and blowing up anyone opposed to yl and thaksin, suthep didnt start the shooting the reds did and they threatened to split Thailand and have their own state. They also threatened a civil war if they didnt get their way which is why the army stepped and started to remove all their weapons and explosives, you really must have a short memory or you are just trolling, then again all thaksins apologists have a problem with the truth Edited January 23, 2015 by seajae
