Is it even possible to lead a celibate life?

An interesting article giving various views on the subject.

One of the Catholic priests against compulsory celibacy was Cardinal O'Brien of Glasgow.... who was notoriously not celibate. But we all know about the people who failed; the gutter press revels in publicising their shortcomings.

Sexual urges are part of being human, though it is fairly clear that they are stronger in some than in others. That doesn't mean that abstention from sex is wrong, only that it may well be difficult.

My own feeling is that it should be voluntary for people taking religious vows. Obviously those who enter a monastic or conventual order will wish to vow celibacy, but why should ordinary priests? Some will, and good for them.

Buddhist monks seem to take their vows lightly, but perhaps that view simply reflects the gutter press (again).

I'm sure most of us remember Trollope's Mrs Bishop Proudie. Can you imagine a Mrs Cardinal or a Mrs Pope?

As a mental experiment, I once tried to masturbate without touching myself.....all in the mind. It worked, but was hard work and not worth the effort. I suppose with practice and knowledge of mental techniques, it would be easier.

I mention it because I believe the power of the mind is a potent thing, and thus I believe that celibacy is quite possible, without anguish, if one puts one's mind to it.

I don't see the point of it though.

The article talks about devotion to God and His followers...OK, so don't fall in love and get married, but surely a nightly self-gratifying hand job takes only 5 minutes out from God's work and frees the chap up to concentrate entirely on the job for the rest of the 23 hours and 55 minutes. It could even be ritualistic.

A steam engine works best with a pressure relief valve rather than no valve and constant vigil to keep the pressure at the correct level.

Whether you see the point of it or not, Seastallion, it is mandated in some organisations, not only the two major ones mentioned in the article and my post.

Some people seem to have much weaker sexual urges than others, which would make your nightly exercise of self-gratification less important to them.

I understand the stated reason for the mandate....I was just offering a suggestion that could help by bending the rules rather than doing away with them...as in the article some suggest do away with the mandate.
