Forest Flood overflowed more than 200 homes in Phang_nga

Forest flood overflowed more than 200 homes in Phang_nga province over the night, prompting the residents to chaotically evacuate to safety. No casualties were reported but damages have yet to be determined.

At 2 am this morning, while inhabitants of Ban Ramanee (บ้านรมณีย์) in Kapong (กะปง) district were sleeping inside their dwellings amidst the heavy rain outside, water from the forest overflown a local canal and rapidly flooded their homes. The abrupt disturbance sent everyone running for their lives. People moved to a local school, which was deemed the safest location. The evacuation was cumbersome, the time being at night.

Kapong district administration has sent in flat-bottom boats to assist the residents and search for any person who might still be stuck inside the flooded homes.

Following flash floods and mud slides on Friday evening in Phang-Nga’s Kapong district, the Phang-Nga authority, led by Governor Winai Buapradit, stepped in and provided relief packages to the victims. The natural incident occurred late at night making it difficult for 450 local residents of 150 families to evacuate. They however managed to go to safe shelter at Rommanee School which is located on higher ground. The incident caused no casualties. Yesterday afternoon Governor Winai led Phang-Nga Red Cross Society to give out necessity bags to the flood victims again. The authority also surveyed the full scale of damage caused by the floods and mud slides. This includes houses and agricultural land. The Governor asked local villagers to be extra cautious with drinking water as natural sources may be contaminated he said. He also explained that a concrete drain will be built to prevent land slides while evacuation drills will be conducted for local residents. Meanwhile the Route No. 401 between Surat Thani and Thakuapa is now open for traffic after rescue teams cleared the mud on the road.
