One dead, three hurt in Phuket student gang shooting – VIDEO

Students can been seen gathering under the palm tree at the far side of the road before the black car arrives. Two men get out of the car and there appears to be some dialogue before some of the students leave. Others students on bikes arrive and at that point the gunman opens fire.

PHUKET: -- A 17-year-old boy was killed and three others were injured – one severely – when a gunman stepped out of a black Toyota Vios and start shooting at a group of students near Bang Yai Canal in Saphan Hin just after midday today (January 29).

At 12:22 pm Kusoldharm rescuers dispatch units after received a call about the shooting close to the Phuket Vocational College. The shooting, they were told, involved students from the Technical College in Phuket Town.

They arrived to find the body of Sakkarin Kiembuth, 17, from Rassada, a recent dropout from the college, lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound in the right side of his chest.

Still alive but in very bad shape was another youth, Piyapat Jatsang, 17, bleeding badly from a bullet hole in the back of his head. He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Also shot were Rapee Sombat, 17, hit in the left leg; and Sataporn Moidee, 17, hit in the upper right chest. They were taken to the nearby OrBorJor hospital by friends.

Police later found six 9mm casings and two spent bullets nearby.

One witness described how the killing took place. He said Sakkarin was riding on a motorbike with two friends and stopped under a palm tree at the side of Klong Bang Yai, along with several students on another three motorbikes.

The black car pulled in close by and one person stepped out and began blasting away at the group. According to security girad who saw the shooting, he fired around 10 shots before the car was driven away toward the Korjan Bridge.

Patrol units were called to track down the suspects in what, at that time, was known only to be a black vehicle.

It did not take long. Within hours, after examining footage from nearby security cameras, police were able to identify the car as a black Toyota Vois with red plates, and could identify the number plate.

Four people have been arrested.

Relatives of the victims said they believed that the gunman was from a rival gang at the Technical College, composed of second-year students at the college. The victims were all first-year students.

What a shame. This place has/had so much potential.

It took me a long time to realize how deadly the 9mm is. It's a smallish bullet but very fast with deep penetration. It's the official NATO cartridge and that's probably why there's so much of it in Thailand. The military uses it because that's what's available to buy from allied countries. (Don't mean Thailand is NATO.)

There are bigger bullets but most are slower if made for a semi-automatic.

There is a lot of that stuff on the street in the hands of kids and people who haven't been vetted. Thailand is downright dangerous.

This was just another "misunderstanding" between students. Tourists should not be concerned for their safety.

Using a car with license plate in a shooting. That's kinda dumb in a sweet way. They would be better off leaving the guns behind and cleaning the streets or something. That doesn't require brains.

Student gang??? Isn't that an oxymoron? Do they get free tuition and credits towards their degree for extra curricular activity??

How many more horror stories like this must we read before Thailand acts to curb this endemic mindless violence.

Children are not born hating each other simply because they go to a different school or college. They are products of a ludicrously macho society and an educational system which embraces corporal punishment and intolerance.

There is clearly a need for a massive new attitude-changing initiative, starting with those responsible for running vocational colleges as well as their young charges. But can we expect this from a regime which gained power at the point of a gun and sees difference as dissent, to be crushed.

One can only be thankful that the grieving families of the victims of this latest outbreak of student violence will not see the callous and sneering comments made on this subject by someThaiVisa posters. I now understand why so many Thais havew a low opinion of falangs.
