A friend wants another opinion on her eyes. She had tests done already but wants to seek a second opinion in Bangkok. She has signs of cataracts but not too bad ; she wants to seek another opinion as 2 tests she had, told her that different eyes were the worst. She needs a third opinion to see which should be right!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a specific doctor/hospital to check out.

Thank you.

Rutnin eye hospital in Bkk is usually the best place.

If the issue is cataracts, the guidance is quite simple: you have surgery when it has gotten to the point that visual loss is interfering with daily life. Which only the patient can determine. A doctor can tell you a cataract is present, but only the patient can say how much it is affecting his/her vision. Of course if there is a cataract, surgery will be needed eventually, but when is up to the patient to decide.

However if there is any doubt about the diagnosis, a through exam at Rutnin is a good idea.

Dr. Keerati at Bumrungrad. He did my cataract surgery. He was conservative in his suggestions. He is very personable had fellowship at Harvard Medical school. Everyone I've recommended has loved him-very personable, doesn't rush you and was very patient with me--I ask questions when my health is involved like I am writing a book.

Thank you for that. Is there a specific doctor at Rutnin that would be best to see.

She does not need surgery, just wants accurate tests and a proficient English speaker that can explain and answer questions.

Cataracts are seen by the doctor - not tested. As said you are the judge of when they need to be removed (obviously not wanting until old age becomes a factor). Expect test results are for other factors and they may not be what she feels and doctors may have factored in different things to say different eyes. For myself doctors say one eye is worse based on far sight testing - but actually other eye is much worse in day-to-day life as have double image and is not corrected by lens. If she has no issues now suspect a third check would just be a 3rd check rather than making one or the other true.

That said there should be regular checks made so seeing another doctor may be good and if staying here doing so on a regular basis. Suspect any doctor at Rutnin or other hospital with large eye department would be qualified and expect they would refer you onward to the best available if you ask.

I had a cataract operation and i then developed a secondary cataract in the same eye, this was operated on with a laser,

I noticed the reduced vision by looking at a white faced wall clock to see if i could see the seconds hand, or read the numbers on the face, also looking through my bad eye, the white face the looks a bit grey. if i look with my good eye it looks white.

sorry to go on I also had an operation for a detached retina at EENT hospital bangkok, link here - http://www.eent.co.th/home.html a lady doctor dr somsiri who also is at bumrungrad hospital Friday evenings. link to her here - https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Somsiri-Sukavatcharin EENT hospital was 160,000 baht cheaper than Bangkok hospital Rayong for the detached retina, I can not recomend dr somsiri highly enough, she speaks excellent english, she is at EENT saturday mornings, sunday and one other day

Can you give us a rough idea of how much a consultation and prescription from Dr Keerai might cost, Orchidlady?

As this question was raised almost 6 years ago, does anyone have more recent experience of cataract surgery in Bangkok, or anywhere else in Thailand for that matter. Thanks

Actually it is covered almost monthly but the search needs to be done via Google as forum software is really bad in search mode.  Cataract/IOL is one of the most common procedures anywhere so there should be experienced doctors everywhere.  Just be sure you need as most cataracts can wait many years before needing removal.

I have used Rutnin before for corneal eye surgery and can recommend them.
I have cataracts and a new problem that may have been related.
I went to Rutnin to diagnose the problem in June this year.

I saw the specialist used previously, She had been professional. The previous surgery went very well and was successful. I would recommend her.

Her name is Chatchompoo Srisuwanwattana

Specialities Cornea , Refractive Surgery , General Ophthalmology and Cataract

She could not identify my problem and referred me to a retinal specialist. Dr Roy Chumdermpadetsuk

He is specialist for both Cataract and Retina. I had to wait some time because he had a lot of patient bookings.

Dr Roy had some special diagnostics on the retina done and identified the problem.

FYI, the cost of diagnostics was about 2300 Baht.

For Cataracts its unlikely you will need such special diagnostic tests, probably just the solution used in the eyes for the doctor to visually examine the eye.

The cost of the doctors fees was 2640 Baht. (NB: this was total - covered both doctors)

Dr Roy Very professional also, thorough, the doctor explained things very clearly. Extremely good english.

I am going to need retinal surgery. But Its not yet urgent.

However, i have been getting more interference from cataracts. Dr Roy reviewed my explanation of issues and recommended that I get the Cataracts done at the same time as the retinal surgery.

More importantly for your information the cost estimate for Cataract surgery per eye at Rutnin was 80,000 to 90,000 Baht per eye. Thats for normal monofocal lenses, the Doctor did not consider that more expensive multifocal lenses would be much more benefit.

+1 for Dr. Roy at Rutnin.
