I must have missed something in one of these posts, because I see a reference to "indie Chinese girls" and I have no idea what they are – – please enlighten me so that I can follow the posts a little more closely.

1) no shes selling earings to tourists !! Shes self taught decent english and I am told workable (for prices etc) chinese... Taught from books no school.. Fact is the shop owner was relieved to finally find someone professional, reliable, punctual, and trustable. Now she needs one staff instead of 4 !! Theres not a shortage of opportunities, theres a shortage of people you can actually trust to get on with a job 100% and self manage.

2) the restaurant actually was a really cheap takeover.. Probably 60 - 100k in.. Its in a superb spot and seems to be going gangbusters a bit more than 3 months in.. Not tourist at all (its a moobaans pool and restaurant which was badly / never managed by the moobaan). Again something done badly under hopeless management was seen, taken on by someone competent, and apparently making a superb go of it.

As NKM has correctly pointed out, how is a lad or lass (who left school at 12 years old) (and has black skin) supposed to move into one of these (supposedly readily available) good jobs or business opportunities you describe.

I will just note below some of my own experiences and observations and other members can make their own judgments upon the veracity of your claims.

  1. My broker has a business degree and master's degree from Chula.  Her salary is 20K per month.
  2. One of my ex girlfriends has a law degree from Chula (she is from a dirt poor family and won a provincial scholarship due to her academic performance).  Not been able to get a start anywhere in law (despite graduating top of her class) but because she has good English she was able to get work as an assistant hotel manager.  Salary just raised this week from 13k to 18K.
  3. Another ex girlfriend, degree in civil engineering and post graduate qualifications and licensing for blasting and explosives.  Heads the shot firing team for a corporate giant.  Salary 20K.
  4. Previous next door neighbor career teacher, 35 years of service, just retired and salary at time of retirement 35K.
  5. Old Badminton partner, business degree and MBA, very dark skin, unable to get any job in the business field whatsoever, and wound up selling real estate on commission only basis.  She made ends meet in the first year then the ruble collapsed.  She met, and within two months, married a Norwegian guy 42 years her senior.  I asked her a straight if she loved him and her reply was "I get to leave Thailand and he likes dogs".
  6. Another ex girlfriend selling on retainer and commission for the largest bedding company in Thailand (in one of the largest retail centers) would regularly bring home less then 20K.  I remember one month where there was a staff shortage due to illness and she was "ordered" to work all 31 days in a month.  Her total take home was 27K.
  7. You claim a friend of  your wife works "5 days a week in retail".  I know dozens of Thais who work in RETAIL and have yet to meet a single one that has a 5 day work week.  All on them get one day off a week (and frequently not even that).
  8. After NKM called you out on your mega successful restaurant startup example you back peddled and said they bought in for just 100K or so.  How many workaday Thais have access to 100K up front.  5 percent of the population?  And there is no way that a bank will lend them 100K unless they already have an existing profitable business, or hand over the title deeds to a property.  And if they already have a successful business, or hold the chanote to a property free and clear they are not your average Somchai.

Jeez. Fairly typical of some of the total and utter clap trap 'bar stool' theories that gets posted on Thai Visa. Maybe you spend too much time worrying about what other people are doing and posting your BS theories. I lived (and still retain a place) in Penang for 4-5 years before spending more time in Thailand and find interacting with the Chinese no problem, speaking some Chinese helps I guess, Hokien and Mandarin.  As for the 'handsum man' crap, never heard it in years TBH (and the comment itself speaks volumes), but maybe I spend less time socialising with hookers and bar girls than you, which of course would also limit you to only being able to comment from the viewpoint of 'careful observation' rather than from the basis of any experience whatsoever.

Instead of carefully observing, get off yer ass (and the internet) and go try interacting with people. You might be surprised. But hey, like I give a 5hit what you do. Ignore list.

I will do my best to reply to your rant.

  1. I don't drink, never have.
  2. I don't go to bars.
  3. I speak fluent Bahasa Melayu Baku.
  4. Who are these "Chinese" you are so adept at interacting with in Penang?
  5. I am sorry that you have never been referred to as handsome.  However, I have no control over that facet of your life
  6. "...rather than from the basis of any experience whatsoever."  Care to test you Thai language skills against mine?
  7. Cool.  Your ignore list.

I'm jealous; all those exe's and you're still drawing breath...c'mon, guv, wot's the secret? It amazes me how folk that live, say, in BKK, can eat, clothe and rent all in for about 100 quid a week and still keep their pretty heads above the klong water. I don't doubt this does happen but, you know...

My ex TGF; a PhD in Particle Physics, Emeritus Professor of Mathematical analysis, Noble prize winner and Astronaut. New 6 bed house in the BKK suburbs and drives a new Mercedes all on 25k a month working at Chula as a Superviser Teacher. I should add she has the most incredible ass but surely that shouldn't come into the equation. I'm still trying to add it all up to this very day but fear it is beyond my remit.

Dont know who you know but loads of the Thais I know do can put thier hand to 100k... The head chef (cook) in the venture mentioned.. Multiple big bikes.. 5 mil or so house on a moobaan owned outright from a prior farang marriage.. Tried to buy one of my dirtbikes for 120k cash.. Very dark skinned also BTW.

I am up in 'poor' 'rural' chaing mai.. Theres lots of money and disposable income around.. I just spent the weekend in petchaboon.. We had to go to 20 or 30 resorts to find a (not great room) everywhere full, not a single room, took almost 3 hours of stopping at each one.. One place charging a 1000b a night for tents, but was fully booked !! Tents booked in advance !! Roads crammed to bursting with bangkok plated cars, caravans of million baht big bikes GS's, KTMs, Ducatis and triumphs,... Restaurants full.. Blew my mind in a little off the track village type place.

Western tourism may be hurting, domestic sure isnt.

Agree totally . The professional Thais I know make way more then what the op thinks. Thai and foreign businesses will spend the cash if the thai comes from

a reputable university . Some

two bob uni in the back of beyond just won't cut it , in much the same way it wouldn't in the west . Racist yes , elitist yes . Just the way it rolls im afraid ! my wife was offered 50k a month plus commission to work in recruitment but turned it down as it's not enough to live in bkk and have a decent life and send our son to a decent school .

"but loads of the Thais I know do can put thier hand to 100k" - I commented on Thailand's record household debt some time ago.  Here is just a random article from Google.  It was from the last quarter of 2014, but I don't think much has changed here since then.  The article even gives an example of "Din" who basically lives on credit.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-12-16/record-thai-household-debt-crimps-rate-cut-room-southeast-asia

Whilst a lot of Thai's can get their hands on 100k, is it their savings, or borrowed????

Record household debt doesn't just appear overnight.

Sure, a lot of Thai's my appear successful, with their house/s and car/s and gold etc, but a lot of them are deep in debt.

My buddy was paying his hotel manageress 60k (may have been 50 but I am 90% sure it was 60k) a month in Patong.. Unsure if she had a degree.

She was smart and attractive.. Ended up snagging herself a multi millionaire financial trader after comparison shopping a few farangs..  I never liked her much as she always seemed way too money hungry, but hey fair play shes living the life of first class flights and name brand designer handbags etc now. Its what she wanted.

Either way she was getting 60k a month as a glorified hotel receptionist.

Thai women have been in demand for a number of years . If they are half decent looking with a smidgen of education they can pick and choose what farang they date . If they are well educated and from a decent family they will 9 times out of ten choose a well to do thai . If they are the bottom of the barrel / have baggage / Dave from Hemel Hempstead gets the honour of feeding and supporting her and her tribe . These women always find their level eventually .

Here is a good bellwether for you.

If so many Thais have a lazy 100k lying around why was there a stampede caused by yingluks 100k cash back to buy a new car.

And why just a few years after that deal, are is there the highest ever level of default on car loans.

Take a drive up the bypass road these days and look at all those giant second hand car sales yards that have popped up overnight.

Prior to the 100K cash back incentive, there were none.

One of my Thai neighbours has two new cars and three motorbikes.  This year when the her (one) kid started back at school she had to pawn her gold to buy her text books.

Ok.  Lets keep going with our debunking.

Do you speak fluent thai?

If not that already limits your experiences to a small sample of Thais who speak English and work in the affluent areas around tourists.

Or, in the alternative, you are relying upon information that you have received via Chinese whispers.

Fluent no.. Low conversational.. Reading also, that kind of grade..

Also I live in a village in the north.. Spend my time exploring the north and north east.. Closest I get to western tourist areas this year is Chiang Mai which is kinda 50/50. I did my time in tourist zones, got the T shirt.

Very much the exception rather than the rule in my experience. I know of Thai ladies doing similar work for 12-14k per month.

I had a quick look at the TV jobs and PG jobs classifieds - nothing really there.

I then had a quick look at the Bangkok Post job classifieds - quite a few jobs advertised there.

I ticked the boxes for jobs that were suitable to Thai females.  Eg. secretary / office admin, sales, hospitality etc.

There are a lot of Government jobs going and most were around 12,000 to 16,500 baht a month.  (the Government jobs were in English on the front page, and Thai for the specific details)

Many of the private companies had salary "negotiable."

Forum rules prohibit me posting a link, but if you check it out yourself, you will see that is the salary range quoted for female orientated Government jobs in Bangkok.  (the highest average salary being around 16,500 baht per month)

I have cut and paste the first job on the list under the "Secretary /  Administration" section.  Perhaps the moderators will allow some latitude.

Mini bus owner driver 35 to 55k baht a month depending on the season, they do quite well once they own outright or finish paying off their vehicle

Poor farangs 500 baht a day working in the building trade illegally

You are more than a bit on the light side of what a good successful accountant with their own business makes working mainly for expats

As others have said,  the above not in Phuket, but IMO it brings some of the other "examples" back down to earth..........

Three taxi drivers I know are on the bones of their <deleted> and one is trying to sell his Thai style house for 1.2 million in order to survive; a Thai sparky I know (and a good one at that) picks up 15k plus "service charge" in a 4 star hotel on Beach road; a lady front desk and staff manager at a medium sized hotel here gets 30k and 4 years ago my ex gf was getting 10k as a food hall cashier (and she is a qualified junior accountant).

Don't know quite where the big money is being paid and some salaries quoted here seem outrageous (unless they include "extra services").

If a girl works in a "real" spa she will be on 12-15K per month.

But you have raised an interesting line of questioning to follow.

Of the total population in Phuket, what percentage holds a Phuket chanote free and clear?

The civil engineer I referred to was on 20K per month.  She had borrowed 2.5M to buy a house in that dreadfully ill conceived estate at the back of the new bus station and she also had finance on a new car.

That was several years ago.  I drove through that estate recently to have a look.  It has degenerated into a slum.  Most of the houses are already in disrepair.  Trash and wrecked cars and bikes everywhere.  Every second house has a for sale sign on it.

Phuket examples:

Real massage job in spa: 25-30k

Receptionist: up 25k

Repair men 5☆ hotels: up 20k

Taxi driver: up 30k

Accountant: up 40k

My experience is, it is difficult to find a Phuketian who has not 0.5 rai land and his own house. Looking at my Phuket thai friends some have 10-150 rai which is nothing special.

Your taxi driver making 30K a month.  How much per day to lease his car from the owner, or alternatively, how much per month on the finance to purchase it?  And how much per month is paid to his local "association" for the right to park somewhere?

Many of the receptionists are now being replaced with staff from PI because they have good English.

The hotel repairmen I have personally encountered in Phuket have all been Pa  Ma.

Hotel repairmen/floormen 20k up nearly all 5☆ Hotel in Maikhao pay this level.

Pick your average Taxi at the airport 30k up.

Spa therapist in good spa get 35% from turnover or 15k+hourly commission. 20k-30k without tip is normal.

Some good spas in Patong have a turnover of 100k per day.

The Phuketians who are working hard have no problem to play golf 2k per hole or go on holiday to Europe every year for 3 weeks.

Utter nonsense.  So if a spa has more than three employees the owner looses 105% of his turnover paying commission to his staff.

You know what he meant . 35% commission on work/services provided let's say it's 1000 baht an hour she will make 350 baht . Massage is labour intensive with very little materials used . She could easily make 2000 baht a day . I hope that's simple enough for you to understand .

As stated, I did check local classifieds, but there was nothing much to use as a guide.   We could compare living costs of Bangkok and Phuket, but it would be off topic.

This leads me to a question, perhaps other members may know the answer.

I have posted the job advertisement for a Government position based in Bangkok.  Would the same Government position, but based in Phuket, pay the same salary.  (legal salary that is)  Eg. does a nurse with 5 years experience working in a public hospital in Bangkok earn the same salary as a nurse with 5 years experience working in a public hospital on Phuket?

If so, this Government job on Phuket would pay the same salary as the job in Bangkok I have posted.

I think transport drivers on Phuket is not a good example to use when comparing salaries because the drivers are basically part of a cartel.  Transport on Phuket does not operate under free market forces, therefore, you are basically comparing the salaries of criminals to legitimate staff.
