Hi there

I am on UBC.

Is it possible that I could occasionally take my decoder box and card to a second "weekend" location where there would be another dish set up, thereby not having to pay twice?

Is it possible to get a second UBC dish? If not what are my alternatives?

Thanx v much....

Someone suggested to me tonight this was not possible. I'd be a bit surprised.

No-one know?

No problem at all, you'll just need to get a second dish installed at your weekend location.

This can be done by any satellite installation shop, and won't be to expensive.

There's no way UBC would now where you are located, your box is only a receiver, not a transmitter and they have only one satellite beaming down over all of Thailand and pretty much of its neighbours :D

Although I doubt it's allowed if you go about reading the small print in your contract :D

PS, I do assume your weekend location is somewhere in Asia under the Thaicom 2/3 footprint :o

I asked UBC about this several years ago and the answer was that it was not permitted. I would need a second subscription.

However, you should be able to find a satellite installer who will fit you a dish, aimed at Thaicom,

at your holiday home. Then plug in your decoder.

BTW it may be worth installing a bigger dish, say 1 metre, to try and avoid the rainfade.

Thankyou all for your replies.

Funnily enough I was told by the non techo friend that one had to be in the same district, but yes I agree Monty, I don't see how there's any transmitter element as in a mobile phone that gives the location.

If someone's actually done it perhaps they could own up and confirm!

Thanx again

Been there and done that, with the second dish not even in Thailand but in a neighbouring country (where you can't get UBC subscriptions officially)...

Even if there is a transmitting part in the tuner (which there isn't, would need a transmitting unit on the dish and a second cable as well, much like the iPSTAR equipment) how would the box know where it is??? Also build a gps receiver in maybe, which would need an additional antenna as well if used indoors :o:D

Without the above mentioned additional equipment, there is technically no possibility to limit a one-way receiverbox for use in just one district!!!

Well, actually they do limit the area where you can use the box, by limiting the footprint of the satellite beam. This does require some very special engineering of the antenna on the satellite, so it can be done only before launching the bird...

On top of that, antenna design is NOT an exact science, hence we are for example able to receive the Agilla Ku band beam in most parts of Thailand, eventhough we are WAY out of the footprint!!! The Philipne antenna designers certainly didn't mean us watching dreamTV in Thailand :D
