PHUKET: Awaiting the results of an autopsy, investigators have already written off the death of a Japanese man found off the coast of Kalim Beach as a suicide by drowning.

At 1.30pm today (February 14) Patong police were alerted that a fisherman had discovered the body of an Asian man in the water, about 50 metres from the rocky coastline, 3-4 kilometres from Patong at a spot known mostly only by local fisherman, near Soi Phrabaramee 9 in Kalim.

From the surface of the water, investigators could see clearly the body underwater, both of its hands were “stuck firmly to rocks, with its feet pointing towards the sky”.

The body was retrieved and transported to Patong Hospital. Initial examinations found no sign of foul play. The body was thought to have been dead for 6-8 hours.

On the rocks, nearby, neatly folded clothes – grey shirt, trowsers and yellow shoes – were found and presumed to belong to the victim, who was identified by a document that was slipped inside a clothes pocket.

The document contained the name of a tour company in Phuket Town, and the name Mr Hiroshi Yoshiki, 34, a Japanese national whose occupation as a tour guide was also listed in the document, police said.

Police speculated that the man had most likely committed suicide due to a “Valentine’s Day heartbreak” or “some other personal problem”, though at this point it is not clear what evidence led them to such a swift conclusion, other than today being Valentine’s Day.

Unbelievable! Not the sad death, suicide or by other means, but the immediate police response to it.

''Police speculated that the man had most likely committed suicide due to a “Valentine’s Day heartbreak” or “some other personal problem”, though at this point it is not clear what evidence led them to such a swift conclusion, other than today being Valentine’s Day##.

For the love of all that is good, will somebody upstairs at Police HQ please inform all officers to state only the minimum known FACTS about any death, suspicious or otherwise, and NOT to speculate.

Having made the initial statement, evidence will now be collected to support the only open theory, thus ignoring truth but saving face for the officer. #Thainess 101

the body looks weird, almost as if the head was severed from the body

Yes it does look like that.....6-8 hours of decomp wouldn't make the head come off.....they wrapped it up separately from the body.

LOS = Land Of Speculation. No matter how determined, I would be surprised by anyone who upon taking the last breath and dying could continue holding a rock. Given that upon death the muscles relax this is just illogical.

The weirdest thing is that some posters seem to have x-ray vision as the photos in the OP show a tightly wrapped body. If speculations are going to be made about decapitation why not include that the victims arms seem to have been amputated also? Can't see them in the pictures with my non-x-ray vision.

But, what else woudl you have the police due given they are incapable of distinguishing and clearly stating a "fact."

Police "speculated a likely valentine day heartbreak!"Something Police are good at."speculating" and then turning it into "facts" and a verdict promptly afterwards

I initially thought the same thing but upon closer examination, I think it's just some folded linen used to wrap the body.

Unfortunate to die at only 34 years regardless of the cause.

You've all missed the obvious/usual suspects.

What about the BURMESE? Surely they should at least be considered as having had something to do with this, just ask any self respecting Thai, they'll tell you!
