Dos and don’ts guide for Chinese tourists in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- Officials of the state and the private sector in Chiang Mai are now prepared to distribute folders to Chinese tourists advising them on "Dos and Don'ts" as they expected an influx of Chinese travellers to the northern city during the Chinese New Year festival, starting this week.

The movement by authorities came after numerous complaints of the Chinese tourists while they visited several places and had committed incidences of socially irresponsible behaviour.

Chiang Mai tourist police inspector Pol Lt-Col Asavatorn Wongsawat said complaints came from local people very often of Chinese tourists breaking traffic laws, thus causing frequent road accidents.

He said therefore the police needed cooperation from both the state and private sector to ease the problem.

A local private museum in Chiang Rai which accumulated paintings of Archan Thawal Datchanee had to display sign boards in Chinese language seeking cooperation from visitors after some of the paintings were ruined by the Chinese tourists.

A general manager of Ban Dam Ban Nang Lae museum Mr Noppadol Kuenpet said several thousand people visit the museum daily, half of them Chinese.

But the upcoming Chinese New Year would expect visitors doubling from normal time, prompting the museum to increase s dozen more personnel to take care of visitors.

Besides the museum also sought cooperation from tour guides not to leave their Chinese tourists watching alone, he said and added that this could alleviate the problem created by tourists at a certain level.

The folders listing the Dos and Don’ts were prepared by the Chiang Mai tourism industry association to distribute to Chinese tourists, while tourist police will also be deployed at tourist destinations to give advice to the Chinese travellers.

More than 200 guides will also be arranged for the Chinese tourists coming during the Chinese New Year.

Authorities expected over 100,000 Chinese tourists to Chiang Mai during the period with revenues of 600-700 million baht to be generated.

They should try following some of them.

So 600-700million Baht with 100,000 visitors to CM, that's 6000-7000Baht of revenue per person, hardly what you would call big spenders especially if that includes hotel costs!
