Hi,

Newbie here, came to CM about a year ago. I'm looking for good sources of news in English. I keep hearing rumors of things like a new airport in CM, a new race track, new highways, etc. But rumors they seem to be only. Has anyone heard anything credible about a new airport? Does anyone have a reliable news source? Any English speaking doctors posting or reading here? I'm not sure how much I trust Thai doctors.

Thanks!

The authorities have just spent millions and millions of baht upgrading the existing airport so I very much doubt that anything will happen for many years, but this is Thailand what do I know.?

This rumour has been circulating for years though just like the monorail link.

If it did come to pass however, what would they rename Airport Plaza?

Bobnoxy You have been here a year and you still don't know that Thai Doctors working in private hospitals in CM speak excellent English.

Considering most have been to the best Thai Universities and completed their extensive training in English speaking countries you would expect that they could speak English wouldn't you ?

As you even had a problem finding the Chiang Mai forum continue reading the multitude of threads, on all your interests, by using the search engine top right hand corner of this page and all your

questions will be answered

Er...actually, no as I haven't been to any of the local hospitals for anything yet. Just one local in private practice. But thanks for the gentle upbraiding just the same. I was just asking. I thought this was a friendly forum.

Actually, Airport Plaza was re-named several years ago and is now officially called "Central Plaza, Chiangmai Airport" complete with new logos etc. Typically, no-one thought to replace the huge sign on top of the building or maybe the budget ran out, but it's enough to ensure that the entire exercise was futile and everyone will continue to use the old name until they really do move the airport.

Well friendly if you have a sense of humor a little bit off center.

there are some excellent posters here as well as the rest of us. Welcome to Chiang Mai.wai.gif

As for English speaking making them a good doctor. Not really. One of the worst I have ever seen is at the Ram. Also in his field the Ram also has one of the best in Thailand although he is semi retired now and has cut way back on what he does. He actually told me to see another doctor for some arthroscopic work as he is getting older and no longer does that intricate type of work.

I had two specialist back in Canada advise against an operation as long as I could take the pain. He took the time to explain why they had advised not to do it. He said in 40 years of practice he had only seen it done once.

Read about current plans for the present airport and proposal for a new one here:

http://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/a-governor-under-pressure-an-interview-with-chiang-mai-governor-suriya-prasartbandit/

I read the article and it was long and useless. Told us literally nothing.

Here is it's comment on the new airport.

"“New airport?” he laughs. “That is a rumour. All we have done just now, and I mean very very recently, is send a request to the central government for a feasibility study. The projection for this airport is that at a 5% growth, it can manage to function for another ten years. But last year we grew at 27%. So we must reevaluate. A study is soon to be done and yes, we will eventually have to move airport out of the city. But it’s all rumours!”

Rumor we al knew that any how.

Simple. They could call it, "Old, in dire need of Maintenance and paint-job Airport Plaza."

Anyone else noticed how Shabby the place is looking?

I think there is plenty of room for expansion, even a second runway with limited condemnation of certain properties on the canal road. Run down cheap hotels and empty lots mostly.

We were by there today and that makes sense. My wife has an old college friend working at a bank in the city. He says they intend to move at some point, and moving a few miles east on 1317 would see them buying land at a lot less than they will sell the land they're on now, helping pay back much of what they'd borrow to build. Who knows? Any place with more parking would be a nice change.

While we can accept the airport will stay where it is for the forseeable future wouldn't it be nice for the air force to hand it over to create a huge park which could be the lungs of the city.Build a new airport out of town, let the speculators make a lot of money and build a mono rail into the city...dream on.

While it might be considered big enough to last another 10 years if you were unlucky enough to be at the airport during the start of the Chinese New Year you might question that.

The relatively small arrival area for international flights was bedlam.I believe some 70 charter flights plus the commercial operators arrived during the first couple of days. The car park was full we had to double park with the hand brake off trying to find our family coming in from Bangkok. They came with Bangkok Airways into international arrivals but their bags went to Domestic...total shambles Dozens of hotel drivers holding up pieces of paper with Chinese names trying to find their clients. So no matter how much money they have spent the area simply cant handle this sort of scenario. Not enough parking, a miniscule arrivals area and a long wait for a taxis.
