MG crashing the sub-compact car market?

Featured Replies

How about this then?

There's more articles about this new rival to the Yaris and Swift in the 'other newspaper' but has anyone any experience with their poorly selling, earlier model, the MG6? I recall seeing a hoarding with the MG6 (I think) a few weeks back but to be honest, I didn't know the marque was available here.

Mrs NL is all excited about this new MG3 which in her eyes is very nah ruhk.

  • Around the world you buy land and houses to get resale value, not cars, unless their collector's specimens. Production cars are a consumable, not an investment.

They seem to be making more of an impression in Laos.

I guess there has been some pricing problem, but hardly the strongest Ad campaign was it???

MG (Morris Garages) is Chinese owned. They have a design centre in UK and these vehicles are built/assembled Thailand. They also build some vehicles in UK - probably out of politeness more than anything else - although having a Euro-input on design can't be a bad thing. Their Thai factory is at Eastern Seaboard Ind Est., Rayong.

the UK reviews of the MG6 are at best, mixed.

Beware! China is DESPERATE to make a car that is up to international standards - and at the current rate of progress, this event is imminent.

No resale value. Check the price around the world...

Whereas "world" prices are sometimes useful, the Thai market is beset by government regulations, duties and Taxes all of which will impinge on the resale value of the cars here. As they are now being built here, one would expect the initial retail price to be quite competitive.

MG crashing the sub-compact car market? Nah! Drivers in Thailand will do that whistling.gif

It's a joke that anyone can buy one of Britain's great car names and suddenly think they are an MG maker. Does this fool anyone?

Well, we can all hope they'd be able to make something out of that that can actually be eaten.

Also kind like when AMF Voit bought Harley-Davidson.....

Interesting note on Laos since they like prestige car labels. Maybe they are unaware that the MG pedigree has been bred out of the pup.

I agree that their advertising must be woeful if they only ever sold 500 MG6's Note that nobody has chipped in with any tales of crap manufacture, dodgy dealers and useless services like they do with Ford. Just interested to see if those 500 customers are still happy. It has an exclusivity anyway and from looking at the pictures, it isn't a total dog.

Couldn't be much worse than the English made ones--had three MGAs and one MGTF back in the day in the US. Needed two parts cars to keep one MGA working and sold the TF as soon as I could. The problems were mechanical reliability and rusting body parts. Additionally, no decent service was available, and I lived in the Washington D.C., area. However, no Brit car has enjoyed the success in the States that Japanese, German, and Korean cars have.

All the old MG's were two seat sports cars....one seat for the driver and one seat for the mechanic.....biggrin.png

Most of the British car-makers have gone the way of the dodo. Some have gone to the Chinese, others to the Germans, or India. I know Aston Martin is still there (not exactly a mass-market car-builder...), but not sure of too make others.

Ezzra - some very good haggis, perhaps one of the finest in the world, comes from North Korea. (Of course, I'm not sure there actually is such a thing as a good haggis.)

So What.?. A Fiesta here has 4 Seats One for the Idiot, and 3 for Mechanics.biggrin.png

Many years ago I owned a TF. It was a joy to drive: understeer at slow speeds, oversteer at high speeds - so you just had ty find it's "sweet spot" and all be well.

Drive it from (almost) coast to coast in Canada - alost 9,000 km, flawless performance.

At home I have a MGA 1600 Mk 1 imported coupe sitting up on blocks in the garage.

Been there for 30 years.

Engine and gearbox are modified. Broke the crankshaft in the 1600 engine

Now 1800 3 bearing MGB block. has MG close ratio Le Mans gear box.

Great car to drive, started a family so put it away.

Will probably flog it off one day. Don't think it's worth a loy now.

UK - now makes/builds more motor vehicles than it ever has.....and not just Jaopanese brands.
Check it out

The industry also covers industrial, commercial, military, civil engineering, building, passenger and specialist vehicles.

From wiki .....

The automotive industry in the United Kingdom is now best known for premium and sports car marques including Aston Martin, Bentley, Daimler, Jaguar, Lagonda, Land Rover, Lotus, McLaren, MG, Mini, Morgan and Rolls-Royce. Volume car manufacturers with a major presence in the UK include Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Vauxhall Motors (subsidiary of Adam Opel AG, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of GM).[1] Commercial vehicle manufacturers active in the UK include Alexander Dennis, Ford, GMM Luton (owned by Adam Opel AG), Leyland Trucks(owned by Paccar) and London Taxis International (owned by Geely).[1]

Would have LOVED a TF. I had a TC and a couple of Bs but the TF would have been.....ah, dream on...post-42868-0-67265700-1426792469_thumb.jpost-42868-0-08184100-1426792520_thumb.j

We seem to be veering off topic a little bit here.

Feel free to open a new thread to discuss classic MG and other British sports cars.

From a past owner of a TVR

Thank You

Think the conclusion is the MG is a dicey bet if the OP is considering it.......

It's all in the eye for the wives (and us too) .... a friend of ours has a beautiful VW bug for sale and it really caught my wife's eye.....I'm thinking - old - 36hp - air cooled - no AC....but she likes the cuteness and low powered aspect....

Exactly! We can all debate the dated weego and tuna designs and the dodgy Ford service but Mrs NL said it specifically passed the "nah ruhk" test and knows absolutely bugger all about it's economy, service and practicality. It wouldn't be the first car anyway, just something cheap that can get around in manic traffic when it's too hot or dangerous for the PCX.

We will take a look.

As 99.999% of the buyers will not have a clue what TV is or it's relevance to the car buying world(big picture) this thread is actually irrelevant MG will sell the cars as do Ford Chevrolet Proton etc etc.

Go ahead and buy one.

When you fill it with petrol you will double it's value.

Here I am thinking most of this thread is not Thai related but more English? (DELETED).. rolleyes.gifcoffee1.gif

The Chinese owner of Volvo is doing a great job as is the Indian owner of Jaguar/ Rover.
