CHIANG RAI: -- Local officials yesterday inspected the damage at more than 1,000 homes following a hailstorm that hit parts of Chiang Rai on Wednesday night.

In hardest-hit Wiang Chiang Rung district, Tambon Thung Kor Administrative Organisation president Singkham Jomsawan said officials found that at least 770 homes in 15 villages were damaged. Most had holes in the roof or had the roofs blown off.

In Lampang's Wang Nua district, provincial disaster prevention and mitigation head Ekkrit Jittangkul reported that more than 700 homes had been damaged by the hailstorm.

The worst-hit area was Tambon Thung Hua, where about 450 homes were damaged and a monks' residence burned down after being hit by lightning.

We were in the middle of a Thai Funeral in Chiang Khong with the monks just starting to chant when this storm hit.

Sent all the guest tents flying into the air, all the guests streamed into our home, and threatened to knock the body off the float as the winds stripped everything away.

Had to close the roll-up doors and shutter the windows while the wind drove the hail sideways.

Have to give the Monks props here as during the half-hour chaos they never stopped once chanting.

The winds were strong enough that they also brought down an Industrial-sized LEO Billboard that stood standing behind a furniture shop at the end of the road to the Chiang Khong Thailand-Laos Friendship Bridge. Bet the owners were shocked when the thing collapsed right into their kitchen.
